🧵First cover story for @DTRmag: side-by-side comparative analysis of the different loitering munitions that have been used by #Ukraine and #Russia in the war. The more success LM have, the greater their visibility to potential Western users & higher likelihood of their adoption ImageImageImage
2. Ukrainian forces have primarily relied on foreign systems provided by international allies: the Switchblade 300 and soon Switchblade 600 from AeroVironment (US); Phoenix Ghost from Aevex Aerospace (US); and the Warmate from WB Group (Poland).
3. UAF have used 150+ Warmates and Polish firm conducts regular deliveries of new stock to #Ukraine. Switchblade 300, which has been highly coveted by the press, hasn't had the kind of ‘game-changing’ effects on the battlefield many armchair observers were breathlessly predicting
4. However, when considering claims made that #Switchblades are malfunctioning, it is important to remember that they are designed to fall to the ground and disarm if, after 15 minutes of flight, its operator has not found an appropriate target.
5. Should the conflict continue to draw out, #Ukraine will field and introduce its own domestically-built loitering munitions. Two Ukrainian manufacturers currently produce such systems: Athlon Avia, with its ST-35 Silent Thunder and CDET with the RAM II.
6. Before long-range Iranian LM were introduced in the war, it appeared that #Russia was using a lower number of kamikaze drones and thus not achieving the same level of impact as Ukrainian forces.
7. Shahed-136s have primarily been used against predetermined stationary targets to replace declining Russian stocks of cruise missiles. Lighter, cheaper+in greater numbers than Russia’s 450kg Kh-101 cruise missile, they can be launched from #Crimea/#Belarus and hit deep into UKR
8. #Russia does possess # domestically-built LM, although it has struggled to up prod. to keep pace with battlefield expenditure. Unveiled in 2019, the KYB is manufactured by Zala Aero. While allegedly heavier with longer endurance than Switchblade 300, it has lower range & speed
9. More visible has been the Zala Lancet-3 loitering munition, with a modernised version seemingly being used. At 12kg it is lighter than Switchblade 600 with reportedly a similar endurance and range.
10. The Zala #Lancet-3 has been said to achieve the best success rate when used simultaneously with reconnaissance UAVs operating at high-altitudes to detect targets, which then transmits coordinates to its operators.
11. Looking ahead at the future of loitering munitions, the more success they have in the current Ukraine-Russia conflict, the greater their visibility to potential Western users. The proliferation of these systems will also likely motivate other nations to develop their own.

🧵Latest w/ @JM_Szuba: US officials confirm that OPEC cuts have not hindered plans to turn existing military facilities in #Saudi into an air/missile defense network testing centre involving many states willing to work together against #Iran's drone threat al-monitor.com/originals/2022…
2. “Think of it like a rifle range for air and missile defenses,” US Army Brig. Gen. John Cogbill, the command’s deputy director for ops, told Al-Monitor in at #CENTCOM headquarters. “You can put [a system] through its paces, get that feedback, and test its limits.”
3. The facility tentatively dubbed the Red Sands Integrated Experimentation Center will focus specifically on testing and fielding both existing and new counter-drone technologies.

1. News that #Austria could be considering F-35s as a replacement fo its Eurofighters is both interesting/concerning in the wider security context of the country, one the Financial Times called a "veritable aircraft carrier" of covert #Russian activity

2. For some time now many Western nations did not share information with Austria because of how many leaks/double agents were reported to be inside its intelligence agencies.
3. Article states that a Vienna-based European diplomat even said "its BVT agency is regarded as being so compromised that for a time it was cut out of much #European intelligence sharing activity."

🧵#Israel's 'Uvision' announced it is fast-tracking the opening of its first US production site in Virginia to meet growing demand for its HERO loitering munitions. Its latest contract with a Latin American country, likely #Brazil, to whom it presented its systems in 2019.
2. In October 2021, #Italy announced it was equipping its SF with the company's HERO-30 munitions. Rheinmetall's Italian branch RMW Italia signed contract with Uvision, acting as prime contractor for European market, producing some ammo components and assembling the systems.
3. RWM Italia has 2 facilities: the main one in Brescia, is said to be carrying out the (partial) assembly of the HERO systems, while the one in Sardinia would be in charge of loading the header of these.

1. A quick thread on the informal but important role #Romania played in "delivering" #Pakistan's artillery to Ukraine which we didn't end up including in this report but is worth pointing out
thedrive.com/the-war-zone/p…
2. It is understood that Romania was likely not part of the formal negotiations around the sale of this ammunition, rather offering to temporarily use its facilities to transport it.
3. When asked about the #UK air bridge, the Romanian MoD told me “in what regards coordinating our support to UKR with other partners (NATO/EU or non-NATO partners) we have been doing so through the humanitarian hub which was launched in Suceava North-East of #Romania"

1. My latest: In an alleged trilateral agreement btw the US and #Pakistan for the sale of ammo to the #UK over the summer, in exchange for the release of a $1.2 billion loan from the IMF pending from earlier this year, Pakistani shells are now in #Ukraine
thedrive.com/the-war-zone/p…
2. Over the last nine months, it has become a pattern for Kyiv to acquire weapons via third-party transfers. However, a more recent and on the rise inclination is for Ukraine to obtain ammunition from third ‘unplanned’ parties.
3. The first evidence of Iran-made ammunition only emerged in early September 2022. As documented by the open-source analyst website Oryx, the artillery shells were 122mm OF-462 types for the D-30 howitzer listed as having been produced in 2022.

1. Unconfirmed but developing thread: since Aug 6, the #UK's RAF C-17 ZZ173 has been doing nearly daily flights to #Pakistan's Air Force base Nur Khan in Rawalpindi departing from #Romania or Cyprus. This past week alone it completed 6 trips according to @TheBrit96. Image
2. Yesterday an informative thread made by @INTELPSF was deleted shortly after it started getting attention, where it was alleged that the #UK has now established a running air bridge between Romania-Pakistan for a mission clearly linked to the Ukraine conflict.
3. Important to note that according to @Sipri the largest Pakistan-#Ukrainian military deal was done more than 20 years ago in 1996 for 320 T-80UD/Ob’yekt 478BEh tanks, built by the Kharkov Machine Building Design Bureau. Tanks were delivered btw 1997-1999 and remain in Pakistan
