Did you know that 7% of global carbon emissions come from road #freight transportation? 🚚

And that @Tesla's Semi truck has almost 2x the range of its competitors?

A short🧵 on the up-and-coming disruption of trucking courtesy of @elonmusk Image
1/ Trucking needs disruption 🚚💥

7% of global carbon emissions come from road freight transportation, aka trucking.

This is comparable to that of the global aviation industry, and arguably much easier to #decarbonise.

Data courtesy of @OurWorldInData Image
2/ Tesla are NOT the first 🥇

Improvements in battery #tech have gone leaps and bounds, to the point where traditional trucking companies like:
@freightliner
@VolvoTrucks
@KenworthTruckCo

and new ones:
@BYDCompany
@nikolamotor

have all released their own electric trucks ⚡🔋 Image
3/ So far, not good enough 😔

But NONE of them have reached the magic 500-mile range...

The US #congress research service deems this as the optimum range before drivers legally need a rest...

But recent news is showing that the #Tesla Semi Truck may have just made it... Image
4/ 500-mile range 🤯

The Tesla Semi Truck recently completed a 500-mile fully laden journey between Freemont, CA and San Diego, CA.

Which included a 4000ft pass...

And it still had some battery left... Courtesy of CleanerWatt
5/ Range compared... 🚚

This range is significantly higher than any of its competitors, and by a large margin...

Leaving them playing catch up with the Tesla, who seem to be leading with their in-house #techstack Image
6/ Efficiency Compared ⚙️

Official figures on the truck haven't been revealed, so some are speculating based on leaked info and Elon's tweets.

And all guesses give the #TeslaSemi bragging rights.

More efficient, longer range, larger battery...you name it. Image
7/ ...but how about charging it? 🔋

It's true that #electric trucks can't disrupt until the infrastructure is properly set up...⛽

The world's >40k Tesla #Superchargers are not powerful enough to charge the Semi in minutes...

A large network of 1000V Megachargers is required. Image
8/ TESLA SHIPS 🛳️

The good news is that Tesla has already built a vast network in record time, so there is certainly a precedent for delivering the undeliverable.

Climate change requires #URGENT action, so we welcome effective builders...

Unlike our friends over at #COP27... Image
9/ A paradigm shift 🧠

Tesla delivered its first units to @pepsi on 1 Dec

Tesla is providing unprecedented efficiency and range...

Tesla's Semi Cabin is a total re-think; drivers can even stand up in it...

Let the revolution continue! 🤯💥 Image
10/ Takeaways 📋
👉 Decarbonising trucking would greatly reduce #emissions
👉 The Tesla Semi is significantly better than its competitors
👉 The first units have been delivered to @pepsi
👉 Only missing a global network of Megachargers to support it
👉 Tesla are chronic builders

Did you know that #wind can cause structures to resonate like guitar strings?

And did you know that this phenomenon can be used to harness #energy from the wind?

A short 🧵 on this alternative wind energy device
1/ Before we dive in, why is it even necessary to harness energy in alternative ways?

It's because turbines aren't optimal in ALL scenarios.
👉 Lack of space (e.g. cities)
👉 Turbulent winds (e.g. cities)
👉 Hard-to-adapt foundations (e.g. buildings)
👉 They're noisy
2/ But vertical-axis turbines could do the job right?

Right! And there is a long history of research behind them.

They work in tight spaces, turbulent winds, and the sheer stress on foundations is smaller.

But, this doesn't mean there isn't a better way...

Do you have any idea how the internet works, or how it even started?

Or even, what the risks and rewards are of the up-and-coming web3 internet?

A short 🧵 to keep you up to speed on this crucial public infrastructure 🚠
1/ The origins 🕳️

Some say the OG was telegraphy, which allows us to share messages globally through electrical signals.

Others say it was the first network of local computers from the 1950s...

In any case, these pseudo-internets are certainly part of the recipe.
2/ Network of networks 🖇️

Key innovations in the 60s and 70s at @NPL 🇬🇧 , #ARPANET 🇺🇸 and #cyclades 🇫🇷 culminated in a network of computer networks 🖇️

An exclusive "inter-net" was born, used solely by academic and defence institutions, not quite the facilitator we know.

Did you know that only 60% of the global population has access to the #internet?

And that as English-speaking we're actually sheltered from most of the content?

A TL;DR thread introducing our long-form article, with data from @OurWorldInData🧵
1/ WE'RE #PRIVILEDGED

In the developed world, most people take internet access for granted.

But in some countries, internet users are still the minority 🤯
2/ MOST OF IT IS NOT IN #ENGLISH

We tend to think that as native English speakers, we have access to everything.

But actually, most of the content is in other languages, with Chinese, Spanish and Hindi > English.

Just look at where most users are from, particularly recently 👇

One of the big debates lately is over #nuclear energy.

Some say it's necessary for #NetZero by 2050.

Others say it's not net-positive for the #environment.

So are smaller reactors☢️a good alternative?🤝
Small Modular Reactors (#SMR )promise to bring a 'modular', more adaptable solution.

Build for a very specific purpose?
👉+1 SMR
Need to scale up for the grid?
👉+10 SMRs (SMR Farm)
Need to ramp down because #fusion finally arrived?
👉 -1 SMR per year
Micro-reactors promise to bring portable nuclear using #SpaceX tech.

👉Fits in a container, hauled by truck/ship
👉Low-carbon
👉Perfect for off-grid emergencies
👉Swallow the diesel generator market
👉Doesn't need refuelling for >10 years
👉Made in Assembly Line
👉Less fuel=safe

1/ With all the talk about France's latest law on mandatory #solar roofing of car parks above 80 spaces, we think it's time to start talking about other symbiotic solar relationships 👇🧵
2/ Although car parks and roof buildings are optimal unused space in urban areas, there is also the need for #offgrid electricity ⚡ in rural areas which often rely on diesel generators when solar 🌞 PV isn't available.
3/ Also, climate change 🌎 is making #farming yields increasingly uncertain, and many farmers want to diversify their earnings to become more resilient
