Russia's war against #Ukraine is also a brutal attack on international law. #Zeitenwende means: We must also find new answers in international law so that it can carry its full strength. @ABaerbock at the @HagueAcademy for International Law. 1/6
Accountability matters. No country should be able to wage a war of aggression in the 21st century and get away with it. Because this crime of #aggression is a crime against the most precious thing we have, our #peace. @ABaerbock 2/6
Where there is no #justice for the victims, there will not be no lasting peace. This is about justice for the people in Butcha, Kharkiv or Mariupol who have fallen victim to rape, abduction, torture and murder. @ABaerbock 3/6
With regard to Russia's war of aggression and the International Criminal Court @IntlCrimCourt we must acknowledge: There is an accountability gap in international law regarding the crime of #aggression. That is why we propose to take a two-pronged approach: @ABaerbock 4/6
On the one hand: We want to support #Ukraine internationally to establish a Special Tribunal for Aggression in The Hague, based on Ukrainian law & supplemented with international elements. To complement the ICC where it currently cannot act due to the accountability gap. 5/6
On the other hand: Adapt the Rome Statute so that aggression can be prosecuted in the same way as genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. So that it would be sufficient for only the victim state to fall under the ICC’s jurisdiction. @ABaerbock 6/6
The courageous protests in #Iran continue. Day by day the regime acts more brutally. Our bilateral relations were already at a low, but with a state acting so inhumanely, there can be no "business as usual". Therefore, we adapt our relationship to the situation. 🧵 1/5
#Sanctions: We are preparing further EU human rights sanctions & we are looking into listing family members of those responsible. Nationally, we will restrict visas for official passport holders and tighten entry regulations for members of EU-listed organizations. 2/5
#Accountability: The brutal repression must have consequences for those responsible. Thus, evidence needs to be gathered. Among other things, we press for a special session of the UN Human Rights Council and will support NGOs engaged in documenting crimes. 3/5
FM @ABaerbock in a press conference with her Icelandic counterpart @thordiskolbrun on six months of Russian war of aggression against #Ukraine: endless suffering & enormous destruction to an extent which we had not seen in Europe for a long time have become a bitter reality. 1/4
Until the very last second, we upheld countless offers of dialogue. Putin did not respond positively to any of them. On the contrary: he literally threw all agreements and international commitments into the dustbin - to this day & without any will to change course. @ABaerbock 2/4
We must accept this bitter reality. There is no way back. But with unity and strength, we are pursuing a clear way forward. We are very glad to have Iceland with us, with the #G7, with the #EU, and together in #NATO, on this path. @ABaerbock 3/4
"Now it is time to seek common ground - the new US Administration has already indicated a return to #WHO & #ParisAgreement. We will not always agree with each other but we will never give up working on solutions." @HeikoMaas#InaugurationDay
“Rituals such as today’s inauguration demonstrate that the democratic institutions of the #USA are working – despite the difficulties of the past days and despite the polarization of US society.” @HeikoMaas#InaugurationDay
"During our EU Council presidency, Germany will advocate pragmatic cooperation and constructive dialogue between the European Union and Turkey", Foreign Minister @HeikoMaas after a meeting with his colleague @MevlutCavusoglu
"In Syria, the humanitarian situation is still disastrous. Germany remains committed to those in need and pledged additional 1.58 billion € this week“, @HeikoMaas after meeting @MevlutCavusoglu
„In Libya, the moment has come for progress in the 5+5 talks and a ceasefire agreement. This requires stopping the supply of arms to both sides as well as taking the conflict parties to task.", @HeikoMaas
European sovereignty, as I understand it, means that Europe can act independently and decide to pool its resources in areas where the individual states have long since lost their ability to shape globalisation to the major powers. (1/6)
The fact that🇪🇺 now imports almost 90% of all essential medicines from🇨🇳 or🇮🇳 illustrates where action is needed. Or just think of 5G, IT, logistics, energy & the natural resource sector. The first step must therefore be an unsparing analysis of our strategic dependencies. (2/6)
We will have to think about how to better contain the conflicts in Europe’s vicinity, even without the US. For that reason, too, we want to finalise work on the European Peace Facility & establish a European Centre of Excellence for Civilian Crisis Management here in Berlin.(3/6)
I don’t think I need to use many words to describe what a revolutionary progress is contained in the recent Franco-German proposals.Olaf Scholz rightly spoke of Europe’s “Hamiltonian moment”. (1/5)
We can overcome the errors of the past. Whether the euro and financial crisis or the confrontations surrounding migration and displacement – all these have deepened the divides between our countries. And that danger exists this time, too. (2/5)
It is all the more important that from the outset we anchor our national measures in a European recovery programme. And that is why agreement on this and on a future budget for the next seven years will be the top priority of our Presidency. (3/5)
