Day 362 of #Russia's illegal war in #Ukraine, so almost a year.

But many of the problems the free world face now is because of inaction almost a decade ago.
A bigger anniversary is today it's exactly 9 years since #Russia invaded #Crimea. Putin even gave medals showing the date Image
And, before we go any further, here's the link to Sunday's thread, in case you need to catch up:

#StandWithUkraine

More and more support for #Ukraine.
Today a delegation from #Israel's parliament has arrived in #Kyiv:

#StopRussia #SaveUkraine
More of the same on the battlefield.
Relatively minor equipment losses for #Russia, but its people are expendable. Moscow and its leaders simply do not care about soldiers, they are just cattle to work in the fields until death. 820 martyrs to Putin yesterday.

#RussiansGoHome Image
For those who like a long (and free) read on the political situation right now I would suggest this article as Joe Biden heads to #Poland later

Multiple USAF reconnaisance planes are chcking Poland's eastern border. I have a hunch Biden may go to Lviv.

politico.com/news/2023/02/1…
Adding to the previous tweet, speculation @POTUS could make the long journey to #Kyiv.

#Ukraine's Dep FM Melnyk saying
"A surprise is being prepared. It's important that on the anniversary we see not only support in words, but also the presence of important partners in Kyiv."
An important, landmark week then.
Here are some dates

Tuesday: Putin national speech
Tue/Wed? Zelenskyy in Poland, likely to meet Biden
Thur 18.30 GMT: @Independent live panel discussion, featuring me!
also "Defender of Fatherland" (men's) day in #Russia
Fri: Anniversary of war
1/2
Also in #Ukraine today they mark the Revolution of Dignity (#Maidan). Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred. People of different ages and professions but with the same values and hopes.

Here, and next tweet, are more of my photos from the bloodiest day of the Revolution, 20/02/14, ImageImageImageImage

The previous photos showed the awful situation as volunteers had to turn a kiosk into a makeshift hospital.

Here, an old couple who'd driven from outside of #Kyiv with carrier bags of donations, aid arriving at St Michael's, protesters taking a break and the #Maidan stage ImageImageImageImage
So Joe Biden HAS arrived in #Kyiv after all. I take my hat off to him and security personnel.

This morning many streets in #Ukraine's capital were sealed off around the US embassy in particular.
@POTUS' schedule is not known.
Here is @POTUS with @ZelenskyyUa in #Ukraine's capital a few minutes ago
More grainy footage of Joe Biden in central #Kyiv, visiting the memorial wall which honours #Ukraine's fallen soldiers in the country's defence against #Russia's attempt to end the country's freedom.

#StandWithUkraine
Joe Biden emerged from St Michael's Cathedral (Mikhailivska) in central #Kyiv to the sounds of an air raid siren.

It's a nationwide warning by the way with #Russia's aircraft taking off.

#StopRussia
Photo of the Day.
@POTUS @ZelenskyyUa
Joe Biden's first visit to #Ukraine since the full invasion.

Hugely significant statement and one I doubted the US could pull off.

#SlavaUkraini Image
More photos of #Biden in #Kyiv.

Also @AndriyYermak from President Zelenskyy's office thanks US Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and welcomes him to #Ukraine for the first time.

#StandWithUkraine ImageImageImage
A new $500m package of support for #Ukraine being announced by #USA to mark #Biden's first visit to #Ukraine since the full invasion.

Also tomorrow a big new sanctions package will be announced targeting those still dealing with #Russia

Joe Biden came to #Kyiv by train from #Poland.

A secret arrival is one thing. Protection while in #Ukraine and getting @POTUS out of the country is a whole new security operation.

Putin must be furious! Image
#Biden is now addressing media in #Ukraine at the start of his meeting with #Zelenskyy

"I felt it was important the President of the US to be here the day the attack began. I was warning the world that (Putin) would attack... This is my 8th trip, much has changed" Image
On #Ukraine's "Revolution of Dignity" day, #USA's @POTUS laid a wreath at the memorial war.

Here are remembered all the victims of #Russia's aggression and imperialism since fomenting trouble in #Ukraine and invading #Crimea 9 years ago today.

#SlavaUkraini #HeroiamSlava Image
Photo from the village of #Tyahynka in #Kherson region after #Russia's shelling yesterday.

This settlement is east of #Kherson city, right on the banks of the river Dnipro. Image
Also in #Kherson oblast, near the river, the village of #Bilozerka was badly hit.

Another small community targeted by #Russia for no reason whatsoever, except to hit civilians.

#RussiaIsATerroristState #SaveUkraine ImageImageImageImage
Also, Russian channels have released CCTV shots of the moment shells hit central #Donetsk yesterday.

#Russia still occupies Donetsk and has done since 2014.

#SaveUkraine
Here's the full White House statement released after Joe Biden made it safely to #Kyiv this morning. Image
According to @AFP, #Japan will offer #Ukraine $5.5 billion financial aid.

🇯🇵Prime Minister Fumio Kishida made the pledge days before the first anniversary of #Russia's invasion. He's now the only G7 leader not to visit #Kyiv. Image
Joe Biden spoke at #Ukraine's parliament, the Rada, and then immediately left #Kyiv - reported by various US media.

It's assumed the President is heading back to #Poland but obviously everything is shrouded in secrecy.
Just to be clear on this. #Putin admitted invading #Ukraine on 20 Feb 2014. This was while Yanukovich was still President on Ukraine.
Putin didn't plan this op in a few hours.
His 2014 invasion was planned long before 20/2/14

#RussiaIsATerroristState

A review of #Biden's short visit to #Kyiv today.

With decoys likely, it's not believed @POTUS is on his way out of #Ukraine. Joe Biden is due to meet #Poland's President tomorrow.

#Russia has attacked the outskirts of #Zaporizhzhia city.

Only one photo released so far and local authorities have not revealed further details on damage or injuries.

#StopRussia #SaveUkraine Image
Supposedly this is the first photo of one of the #USA's Bradley Fighting Vehicles in active use inside of #Ukraine.

#RussiaOnFire

A new bridge being built in #Novosibirsk mysteriously caught fire this evening.
The blaze broke out over 100m into the air on the new construction.

Thx Ali for spotting this
In #Russia's #Kursk region, police and soldiers have today been put on "an enhanced mode of service", meaning they're on high alert.

Local governor Roman Starovoit says during the next few days terrorist actions, sabotage and provocations are possible.
#RussiaOnFire
and another one, this time at an oil facility in #Volgograd region. It's the second oil company to be hit by a blaze within a week.

This was in Nikolaevsky, in the pumping station of the oil company. It took 8 hours to bring this fire under control. ImageImageImage
The artwork of @banksy is to be featured on a new stamp in #Ukraine

The Graffiti artist's work has been adapted to show a figure that looks like #Putin being flattened in his favourite sport of judo

It's released on Friday, anniversary of the full invasion: proceeds to charity Image
Oh thank you so much for the donation to my coffee fund from "appreciative reader", it's my first tip since Wednesday. 💙💛

Link in my bio if you want to join them.
What's happening in #Moscow?
#Putin out of the bunker?

Roads closed in #Russia's capital and a big motorcade steams past.

Some sort of crisis?
Wow. In #Volyn region pf western #Ukraine, the #Kyiv to #Warsaw train has derailed.

It will be reported that there were no casualties. The cause of the incident is being investigated.

No mention of Joe Biden and which route he is on. ImageImageImage
President Biden left a message in the Mariinsky Palace guest book after his visit.

“It is a great honor for me to be welcomed again in #Kyiv, to stand in solidarity and friendship with the freedom-loving people of #Ukraine...
Slava Ukraini" Image
Investigators have searched #Kyiv's local government building amid allegations of bribery.

Some workers have been removed from their posts after being informed of suspicion. But some suspect it could be an effort to undermine Mayor Klitschko's office after growing criticism.
Two people have died after shelling of #Antonivka near #Kherson.

The husband and wide died on the spot when a shell landed near them. The husband worked at the regional children's hospital.

#RussiaIsATerroristState
Reports coming in of more incendiary munitions being fired on #Kherson region right now.

Yesterday #Russia launched thermite weapons on populated areas of the region.
Another day, another war crime.

#RussiaIsATerroristState
A 63 year old man died in occupied #Donetsk when a shell hit the Kuibyshevsky district of the city.

#DonetskIsUkraine
This happened last night apparently.

Thanks @Willmusic4food for alerting me and I've checked it out.

Media in #Poland reporting that @POTUS has arrived safely in the country after his train trip from #Kyiv.

What happened? Navalny used to support #Russia's annexation of #Crimea. I guess it's good if people learn from mistakes.

#CrimeaIsUkraine

An air raid over all of east and central #Ukraine, including #Kyiv.

A threat of ballistic missiles being fired. The moment Biden is out of #Ukraine it would not be the least surprising if Russia attacked.
Here's a good video of the attack on #Kherson this evening. Again incendiary munitions used in populated areas.

#RussiaIsATerroristState

Wonderful news from #Bucha.

After the war crimes, the torture, the murders and nightmares. The devastated town on the outskirts of #Kyiv finally had light this evening as the street lights were switched on for the first time since the first days of the war.

#Wagner mercenary group claims to have taken control of the village of #Yahidne.

It's a settlement on the north-west fringe of #Bakhmut. It's another pyrrhic victory even if confirmed, with #Ukraine likely to have fallen back.

Welcome to yet another daily thread covering all things Ukraine and Russia.

It's Day 1195 and the day of the latest talks between the sides in Istanbul.

But all the buzz is still about one of the most incredible and successful military attacks ever, and Russia is hurting.
Ukraine's astonishingly well planned, daring and audacious attack is front page news around the world this morning.

If somehow you don't know what I am writing about, you're in for a treat. Re-live the extraordinary day by scrolling through Sunday's🧵⬇️

First important news from Poland where the Presidential election has been won by the anti-EU, anti-Ukraine candidate, right-wing Nawrocki

Despite gaining under than 51% of the vote, the tRUmp-aligned Nawrocki can now veto any legislation passed by @donaldtusk & the liberal govt Image

Day 1194 of Putin's war, though let's remember the initial invasion came 11 years ago.

Since February 2014, not once have western sanctions or military support come close to being enough to restore justice and defeat evil.

Welcome to THE daily 🇺🇦 thread for Sunday 1 June
A new day, a new season. Summer officially started, but nothing is likely to change just yet.

Y'day's thread had some great stories, but everything paled into insignificance when justy before midnight came news of a disaster in Russia's Bryansk region:
1/5
I want to start with events in Bryansk region.
What's happened is a tragedy even if you believe all Russians are partly to blame for the war.

7 people died - five passengers on a train and 2 in a truck. 69 were injured.

The lorry crashed down when the bridge collapsed.

Another night of no sleep yet - dramatic action in Moscow.

Time to start another daily thread covering everything to do with Putin's disastrous 'operation' in Ukraine.

It's 5am in Russia and Ukraine, on Day 1190 of the war.
Let's begin...
I've still NEVER missed even one day since the start of Russia's full invasion.

But yesterday's thread ended up being one of the most lively. Another near 50-post story of the day, and if you like seeing "bavovna" in Russia, go right through to the end!
1/3
Russia says 33 drones have been shot down approaching Moscow during the night.

The biggest incident is clearly this at the Mikron micro-electronics plant in Zelenograd, in Moscow oblast...

Hello again and welcome to the daily thread for Day 1189 of Russia's illegal war.

While media keep hinting Trump may be about to impose sanctions on Putin's regime, there's still evidence to say he hates Zelenskyy more.

All the news from and about Ukraine in one🧵right here:
As always though, in case you missed anything yesterday, blow is the link to the start of Monday's thread

So if you don't have much time online, just bookmark my profile page and you can always go back to where you left off for a summary of all the news
A much quieter night, but Russia still fired 60 drones into Ukraine. Air Defence managed to stop 43 (35 shot down and 8 disabled via EW)

But that still leaves 17 which made it through, at a very high strike rate of 28%

Good morning on Day 1176 of the war in Europe.
In my opinion, Ukraine should have won this war in 2022/23.

Effective leadership is based on good, decisive decisions. Sadly, the allies have never been decisive, preferring dithering and half measures.

Welcome to my daily thread:
What I mean by dithering is endless internal political battles in most countries to give adequate weapons. Scholz (Taurus), Biden (everything) the most obvious examples, though Joe was hampered by Congress and is way better than now

But it's always enough to survive, not to win
If you missed anything from yesterday, catch up with this link to the start of yesterday's thread. Scroll down to where you got to and complete your knowledge!

The start of a new week and simultaneously almost the end of 167 weeks of Russia's attempt to liberate Ukraine from its leader and remove the country from maps.

It's Day 1167 of Putin's full invasion. Welcome to Monday's daily thread.
First the link back to Sunday's thread for those who were busy y'day

It started with Ukraine counting the cost of yet more strikes on civilians and infrastructure but there were more strategic hits on Russia during the day, incl a night attack on Moscow.
If you were with me late last night, you will know about the ballistic missiles and big drone attack on Sumy.

I think Russia moved to attacking soft targets in big numbers.

A record 46% of UAVs were NOT stopped.
116 fired, just 42 shot down and 21 neutralised by EW.Image
