Also, the sums discussed in London did not consider debt linked to #reparation for those countries Germany had wrecked havoc on during the war:
π[4/18]
In the preparation of the framework for the negotiations of the #LondonAgreement, it was decided to postpone the question of these debts to a later peace agreement that, ultimately, never happened.
Thus, a major part of the #NaziDebt is unsettled until today.
π[5/18]
In comparison, the treatment of debt of neo-colonies that emerged out of the colonial system around the same time was very different: debt of former colonies was a tool of keeping them from autonomously growing and instead maintain unequal exchange between North & South. π[8/18]
No country of the Global South is afforded similarly favourable conditions today, such as the possibility to pay back their debts in their own currency.
π[10/18]
Some of the countries that allowed Germany to experience its "economic miracle" through this debt relief (e.g. Argentina, Zimbabwe, DR Congo, Pakistan) are today heavily indebted. Yet today, Germany is blocking any attempts of debt cancellation for these countries.
π[11/18]
At the same time, billions of people are suffering in countries across the Global South impoverished by debt.
They are unable to take action on the climate crisis, which is actually exacerbated by the debt crisis...
π[12/18]
... because countries are being forced to extract fossil fuels to pay back interests on loans they have payed back many times over already #ClimateDebtJustice
Many of the debts in the Global South are illegitimate:
π[13/18]
They were imposed by the Global North at the expense of the Global South to benefit dictators and former colonizers.
These debts till this day serve the purpose of hoarding wealth and power in the Global North: they are a form of modern day #colonialism.
π[14/18]
This contrast shows that the global economic system is still largely governed by oppressive systems of power, including #WhiteSupremacy, #Imperialism and #Eurocentrism.
It is time for debt and climate justice!
π[15/18]
If #DebtCancellation was possible for Germany back then, it is most certainly possible for the Global South now to enable a self-determined and #JustTransition.
π[17/18]
π₯Debt Cancellation - Possible for Germany in 1953, not possible for the Global South today?!π₯
Mon, 27 Feb, will be the next global action day of #DebtForClimate with actions happening around the world on a historic date for debt cancellation! #LondonAgreement1953
We would like to remind you of what we're doing and why, and welcome everyone to join us! π
β‘οΈ 11:00 a.m. rally @ministry of Finance in Berlin
β‘οΈ 19:00 p.m. panel discussion with MAPA-activists @Mehringhof, GneisenaustraΓe 2A
π And we have reserved some surprises of course!
Why is 27 Feb so important?
27 Feb 2023 will be the 70th anniversary of Germany's debt cancellation after the 2nd World War, as agreed upon in the #LondonAgreement1953, which partially led to the country's "Economic Miracle".

π₯BREAKING: Dozens of climate justice activists disrupted the #OilandMoney conference, a summit of fossil fuel companies, this morning at the @ICParkLane in London this morning.
The grossly named Oil & Money conf changed its name to Energy Intelligence Forum but obviously no energy intelligence is taking place, as the International Energy Agency warned that no new #fossilfuel projects can be built if we are to limit #globalheating to 1.5C.
The action Sunday was packed with people in Asia, Africa, Europe, North & Latin America who can't accept crushing debt that is destroying communities & planet.
The coming days we'll rise up & confront financial power! #DebtForClimate#DeudaxClima

Activists are directly addressing German Finance Minister @ChristianLindner who as Finance Minister of one of the #G7 countries, has influence on global finance and is also Deputy Governor for Germany in the IMF.
π₯βWe cannot achieve climate justice without putting into consideration the debt that is being put on developing countries, and yet they are suffering some of the worst impacts of the #climatecrisis...." π₯
