Point 1: Wellbeing of leaders predicts wellbeing of staff. There are indices that are specific to leaders. #hapc23
Point 2. Psychological safety is critical to team wellness. (@AmyCEdmondson)
Defn: If you speak up, there is not a threat that you will be punished.
When people need help, they ask.
People can process mistakes, dissent, name problems even when hard. #hapc23
Point towards Google study- most highly performing teams had high #psychologicalsafety.
The HOW they worked mattered most.
Allows teams to identify risks earlier, adapt, and innovate faster.
(@eawtrey your stuff makes it to #hapc23)
Point 3. One way to foster uniqueness and wellness in teams: Job crafting which includes:
- tasks
- relationships
- cognitive perspective (@amywrzesniewski 's work- what is our identity in our work and how does that impact our approach?) #hapc23
I love this idea! Do a STAY interview. Rather than an exit interview, ask annually- what makes you stay? What's the best part of your job?
Help people identify stretch areas.
Give people flexibility and autonomy.
Have clear performance metrics and track over time. #hapc23
Point 4. Create spacial opportunities for connection and belonging
Space matters. Colocation matters. Balance convenience with personal connections. #hapc23#teamwellness
Intellectual space- who are my people?
If teams are too dynamic, people don't have opportunity to create a shared mental model of team and work.
This can be through journal clubs too- not just in work everyday. #hapc23
Emotional space- who has my back?
Retreats (invite someone to moderate so all team members can participate)
Lunches.
Happy hours.
Debriefing sessions, grief/loss rituals.
Where we develop camaraderie and emotional connections matters for team wellness. #hapc23
I love this idea! You can do StrengthsFinders or other tools- 5 Languages of Appreciation (instead of love languages- workplace appropriate!)
This helps build connections in teams too. #teams#wellness#wellbeing#hapc23#pedpc#hapc
Point 5. Personal #resilience does matter and we can't ignore it.
We shouldn't focus exclusively on it - fix the system too. But it does matter. @KristinMDCT pointing to #selfcompassion which is an evidence based antidote to #burnout #hapc23
Take a Self-Compassion break:
This is a moment of suffering. (mindfulness)
Suffering is part of life. (common humanity)
May I be kind to myself? (self kindness) #hapc23#pedpc#hapc#compassion
