I had to say goodbye to my 27 year old cat but it’s ok, he led a life filled with unconditional love and, really, what more can you ask for?
I know it’s not normal to eulogize a pet but he and I were buds forever and he deserves to be remembered so here goes
Also, there’s a lot of shit going on in this world so maybe this makes someone laugh or smile or just feel a little bit better. I hope so.
I got Shadow when I was in high school and I’m 43 now so do the math. In cat years he was approximately 7000 years old.
I have more memories of this cat than I do any person from my childhood. To say he was important to me would be a huge understatement.
He was a little shit for a long time and would absolutely terrorize all our other animals relentlessly.
His favorite game was playing fetch. As luck would have it I also like playing fetch so we were a match made in heaven.
When u weren’t looking he would use his claws to climb up your back. I had so many scratches people probably thought I was a meth addict.
One time, when trying bathe him, I wore my football jacket for protection and he bit through it, drawing blood. He took no shit from anyone.
That was the only bath I ever gave him.
In his later years he went from high energy to super chill. It’s like he just switched on his inner Matthew Mcconaughey and said fuck it.
If he was in your way you had to push or drag him. If he didn’t feel like moving, he didn’t move and I respect that.
His purr was like if a helicopter said alright alright alright.
You could bring him in the car and he’d just stare out the window like a dog. He didn’t understand why other cats were such wusses.
Whenever I let him outside he’d just sit on the porch, or lay in the grass, always content to enjoy the sun and hear the birds. #lifelessons
I ended up getting him a younger brother and that cat would terrorize him and I’d like to think Shadow realized that karma’s a bitch
His little brother died 5 years ago and while neither of us took it well, I distinctly remember hearing Shadow whisper “in your face.”
He slowed down as he aged (don’t we all?) but a few animals gravely underestimated him. RIP several chipmunks and squirrels.
Even though he went blind and deaf over the last two months, he’d walk into walls until he found the bathroom.
He wouldn’t always make it to the litter box but tile is definitely better than carpet :)
Until these last two weeks he sat on my lap every night and I’m bawling as I write this
There has never been a day in my life where I didn’t have a pet and, today, despite having a wife and kids, the house feels empty.
It’s amazing how attached you can get to an animal but he was my little buddy and brought me so much joy.
Alright alright, Shadow, wherever you are, I hope you’re still checking twitter. Goodbye little buddy. I’ll miss you horribly.
I need to step away for a little bit to, um, blow my nose, but in the spirit of twitter send me some funny pet tweets and I'll share a few
Final addendum to this thread: I filled the gaping hole left with two little rescue kitties. Meet Tango and Oreo.
