Finished @amazon’s reboot of #TheTick and, you guys… it’s very, very good. THREAD / LOVE LETTER incoming…
/ I’m not shy about the fact that the 90s cartoon is one of my favorite things in the world. So naturally, I went in with high expectations
/ This new version of #TheTick knocks it out of the park. Here are a few things that the reboot completely nails 👇👇👇
/ First and foremost… the Tick’s personality. Not as easy to get right as you think. Sure he’s big & dumb. But that's 1 piece of the puzzle
/ To me, the Tick’s defining trait is his bottomless well of optimism and gusto. He charges through life with an immense gung-ho spirit.
/ He’s EXCITABLE. Childlike & super earnest. Curious about the world around him. A relentless believer in humanity.
/ And the Tick’s enthusiasm is contagious. It’s what makes his grandiose, mixed-metaphor soliloquies so much damn fun to watch.
/ Another thing the new version gets right is the world-building. It’s a vast and absurd mythology, w/ rich history and colorful population
/ When I was a kid, I was captivated by the richness of the world. I loved when Chairface carved his name (or part) in the moon in ep 1…
/ and then the letters “CHA” remained there for the rest of the series. EVERY time we looked up at the moon.
/ And as for the City’s populace, take a look at some of the random tertiary characters that made the original series the gem that it was…
/ The Caped Chameleon. A camouflaged hero whose only kryptonite is PLAID.
/ The Human Doll. Always chomping at the bit to use his powers: “Let me at ‘em, Cap. I’m full of tinier men!”
/ Dinosaur Neil's badass neighbor, "Taft."
/ SPEAK. A giant capybara that Tick loves more than anything, but in reality all it ever does is shiver and drool…
/ It doesn’t get better than Speak, folks. Seriously.
/ The new version of the show seems to be following suit. In the first 6 eps, we've already met some wonderfully absurd characters:
/ Tinfoil Kevin - a homeless conspiracy theorist who the Tick invites to stay at Arthur’s house, much to Arthur's chagrin.
/ Walter. Dot and Arthur’s step father who always asks if people’s "feet are doing okay." Naturally, he and the Tick get along swimmingly.
/ And then there's VLM. An inexplicably large (and ever growing) naked man who is trudging through the City, getting chased by news cams.
/ (He's sort of a combination between Dinosaur Neil and Blowhole. Which I'm totally good with.)
/ Now let’s talk about the VILLAINS of the Tick-verse. The villains are just as fun and well developed as the heroes… sometimes more so.
/ Case in point: The Breadmaster and his henchman, Buttery Pat. How can you not love BUTTERY PAT???
/ In this version, I love that the main villain is a woman who shoots electricity bolts, but the static constantly covers her with lint.
/ And when she comes home to her lair, Miss Lint is plagued by her ex-husband Derek, a dead beat who won’t give up his half of the lease.
/ Ok this thread is admittedly getting too long. So I'll wrap it up.
/ In summary and in conclusion... ALL OF THE ABOVE THINGS make #TheTick really effing great. 👆👆👆
/ Major 👏👏👏 to @ben_edlund @JoseMolinaTV and everyone else who did such awesome work on this thing. Go watch it! END OF THREAD 🥄
