Getting ready to freeze brand a few cows today.

Each cow that needs a freeze brand is caught in the head catch & then gets a little hair buzzed.
Alvin is holding the tail so no one eats 💩.

Our cattle have 3 or 4 digit id numbers and each freeze brand number needs to be held in place for 1 minute.

Last year we tried putting all the numbers on at once to save time but the results were varied so this year we're taking our time.

Last number being applied to the 107 cow. As you can see she's a bit fidgety but not in any stress.

All finished. The head catch has several ways it holds the cow, each had to be loosened & then the head catch releases and she can walk out.

We started this morning by weaning this group also (theres a good example of a freeze brand id on the cow in the beginning) thus the noise.

This is a soft wean, meaning the cows & calves can still interact but can't nurse & is lower stress. A complete wean usually takes 3 days.

8 hours into weaning & cows are mostly upset they're just now getting hay...
