(1/?)Before I start, let me just say I am in no way defending Pitino. The man presided over a child sex ring and managed to keep his job...
(2/?) But the straw that broke the camel's back was kids taking Adidas money to sign w/ Louisville? That's NFL level fucked up logic
(3/?) I was formerly on the men's basketball staff 4 a D-1 school, and I can tell you with 100% certainty that every school cheats like this
(4/?) And the reason they do is because NCAA treats athletes like they're students. They're not. They're workers who happen to be students
(5/?) These kids generate massive revenues for this abhorrent organization that says they can't get paid 4 their labor. Fuck that.
(6/?) So I kinda have a soft spot for these dirtbag coaches, runners, agents, etc. that are paying these kids in a way.
(7/?) At least they're actually paying their workers. Meanwhile, the NCAA brings in Billions off these kids' likenesses. Video games, apparel
(8/?) And in return they get their "education"
(9/?) But again and again, the schools fail these kids. True story: there's an NCAA rule that allows four year kids to transfer schools...
(10/?) if they enroll in a grad program, and they get an extra year of eligibility in a different sport.
(11/?) when I was at the school I was at, we had one such kid, who graduated, and played football for four yrs at a major conference school
(12/?) he enrolled in grad classes, to come play bball his fifth year for us. I helped him out with his scheduling, etc. And I noticed...
(13/?) that he leaned a little heavier than normal on me to do the paperwork, etc.
(14/?) weeks later, I was helping him with class work, and noticed that he couldn't read. 1 of the more heartbreaking things I've dealt with
(15/?) he held a bachelor's degree from a pretty good land grant school though, known for 🏈.
(16/?) What if we had a different social system, though? Before these kids' abilities become apparent?
(17/?) this young man wouldn't have been done a huge injustice. The problem was he was probably always just a football player coming up.
(18/?) the issue of literacy is a whole other thing, but the point is, can we quit pretending that we care about these kids as anything
(19/?) other than profit machines?
(20/?) They're not treated like students when they get on campus. This is a little known fact, but there is a network of schools that...
(21/?) Actually, I'm gonna walk that back, haha. I've not fleshed out how I feel about those places. Maybe more on that later
(22/?) Actually, fuck it--can we do a show on this @auntiebernice and @tarenceray it's hard to articulate all this
(23/?) So many feelings! But anyway, if we abolished the NCAA, had the players unionize a la Northwestern football a few yrs ago, and then..
(24/?) socialized the revenues the NCAA gets, then by my calculation (could be way more) each of the 340-something member schools
(25/?) could have more than $5 million a year to pay players. And for those of you that cry about well that's not fair!
(26/?) Alabama generates more than Alabama A&M!
(27/?) act like Alabama is short on wealthy boosters who are gonna give them $ regardless.
(28/?) There's so much more we could get into:the fucked up reinforcement of racist plantation politics, etc. But we'll save it for the show
(29/?) But for the purposes of today's news--Pitino is a scumbag because he presided over a child sex ring, not because he paid recruits.
(30/?) Paying players=good.
