This is the 2nd time my wife has had to escort students away from the close proximity of a terror attack in 16 years. Same spot, obviously
This AM I am overwhelmed with sadness for the dead, the wounded, their families. And also overwhelmed with a feeling of luck shameful luck
Our family intact, twice. After 2 attacks on the same place, when 9/11 still feels some days like 2 days ago: at first, it's terrifying
But then I appreciate: twice. In 16 years.
That's twice too many of course.
And I say this with respect & sadness for the victims, but 16 years is a lot of good, empty normal days in a great city.
And then I take a kind of comfort. We make ourselves vulnerable when we live in cities. But we are vulnerable in different ways everywhere
But live here for a reason: to be close. To live in hot, lively, sometimes sweaty proximity with people from all over the world.
We jostle & fight & hurt each other sometimes. But most times? Most of the most of the times? We ride this subway jammed together in peace
It's no comfort to those mourning to remind how statistically unlikely it is we will be personally touched by terror.
I hope these words do not hurt them more.
But for 16 years we got up, went to work, played, fought, made, imbibed, and put our hard spin on the earth's turning, all together.
And this morning I'm on the train to Boston (plug!) and everyone is up with me. We are sad and sick. But
But after enough years in a city as racially, religiously, class-ly, creed-ly dense & diverse as NYC, you don't need the stats...
You know it from NYC experience: there is no need to live in fear. (And frankly, there isn't time. We're busy.)
So those who answer this moment with hate & fear & xenophobia? They have another agenda, because they don't know a thing about us.
And to my neighbors in the USA who are made anxious by the coming world in which white christians are a just another minority among many?
To those who fear a society where you don't just see yourself all day long? Let me tell you: DON'T WORRY. We're here & it's amazing.
Also, it's inevitable. Also, you're going to love it.
I'll leave it there. (I deleted my book tour plug b/c: gross). Help those who are hurting today. Including you. That is all
