Saddened & surprised at ignorance of claims like: #105keefer is "just about emotions/nostalgia".
No. It's about a current community in crisis. Seniors, usually marginalized by public process, spoke up to try & save their homes.
This is their concrete day to day lives.
"Chinatown moved to Richmond" + "Building will have elements of Chinese design & culture"
Reductionist assumptions ignore fact that Chinese communities in YVR are diverse in our multi-layered histories, migrations, and languages.
It only took about 400 years but people are beginning to unravel the essentialist projections of Chineseness #NotHereForYourChinoiserie
"Chinatown is changing. Just accept it."
Chinatown is caught in a 150+ year cycle of displacement and marginalization on the premise of non-sustainable development. #NotChangeAtAll
"City just said no to senior's housing and community spaces."
We've seen Beedie lie in city hall about their CAC's. % of units from last proposal + promising the "community" space to 1 group in
exchange for showing up to city hall (many of which were seniors not based in Chinatown who did not even know what was going in & taken
Advantage of)
Decision against Beedie building is NOT a decision against senior's housing & community spaces. It's decision to call for more sustainable
Less token ways of doing it.
Our knowledge of situation is marginalized as "ignorance" while actual ignorance remains in unquestioned privilege #105keefer
