We elect representatives from single-member districts in winner-take all elections.
THAT MEANS: the party whose candidate gets one more vote wins the seat.
WHICH MEANS: bad to come in 3rd & losing party tries to get *bigger* to win
Voters rationally use as little info as possible when voting. Party ID works pretty well to simplify decision-making. Also passes around in families and communities.
WHICH MEANS: It is very hard for 3rd parties to break in./3
Democrats and Republicans write election laws that often make it easier for major party candidates to get on the ballot./4
There are alternatives--proportional representation in multi-member districts is widely used around the world and tends to generate 3rd, 4th, and 5th parties that are viable.
That change is NOT forthcoming, though, so for now, 2 parties!/end
