Greatness Is Not A Team Effort

1) There is much lip service paid to the idea of "teams"

2) Teams are necessary for ancillary support, and logistical assistance

3) And few will downplay the "team concept" for purposes of morale and political correctness
4) But it is always One Rare Individual that is the heart and soul of a company or a brand

5) @JeffBezos, @BillGates, Steve Jobs, @larryellison, @naval, @tferriss and so on

6) There is always a Visionary, a Genius, a Rare One Of A Kind Individual that creates the Greatness
7) In examining the inner workings of even the most successful companies in the world, there is significant dysfunction

8) Most of this dysfunction comes from the "team" concept

9) It is the same with professional sports teams
10) For instance, if a professional golfer or a professional tennis player wishes to hire the best coach in the world to coach them, he or she has the luxury to scour the earth in search of that one rare individual that has the genius to coach them to Greatness
11) But, if a professional athlete plays a "team sport," he is stuck with the coaches that the team has hired. He has no say

12) And while it may be possible that the Head Coach happens to be a Rare One Of A Kind individual, the entire coaching staff is 100% guaranteed Not to be
13) If a Rare One Of A Kind coach starts an academy, his academy is null and void the day it opens. It is finished on the very day of the ribbon cutting ceremony

14) Because ONLY HE is the Rare One Of A Kind individual. The people he hires to help him coach Will Not Be
15) This is why professional sports academies have a dismal success rate of producing elite world class players

16) Where there is a team, there is a regression toward the mean. For if there is One individual who is Great, the others are Sure to drag him down
17) Human beings are creatures of glorious potential, but mediocre drive

18) They are lazy, jealous, envious, common, uninspiring, derivative, sheep

19) But then there are The Rare Ones, who are often the target of the sheep
20) The Individual is King

21) While one team may be better than another, no team in the world can be nearly as good as the Rare One Of A Kind individual

22) For the Rare One Of A Kind Individual is Pure in his genius. He is homogeneously Great
23) But the "team" is a smattering of goods and bad's across a bell curve

24) As a result, it is average at best

25) There is no five or ten or 100-person team anywhere in the world that is composed of five, ten, and 100 Rare One Of A Kind Individuals

26) Nowhere!
27) Humans enjoy things that "sound nice"

28) Humans like the idea of "fairness" and "equality" and "political correctness"

29) They fear The Truth

30) So much so that they cannot even admit it to themselves
31) And The Truth is, that teams are fundamentally mediocre

32) They are composed of petty squabbles, politics, and dramas

33) They cannot hold a candle to the Rare One Of A Kind Individual

34) And when that Rare Individual leaves the company, the company is never the same
35) Fans didn't pay to see the Chicago Bulls. They paid to see Michael

36) Fans don't pay to see the PGA Tour. They pay to see @TigerWoods

37) It has always been this way. It always will be this way

38) The Rare One Of A Kind individual trumps any 'team" in existence

Namaste
