Demographers warned of the dangers of overpopulation; birth control and abortions became legal; these things led to an expansion of @PPFA national and internationally in the 1950s #humforum18
In Maryland, the services of the clinjc expanded from the 1950s to 1980s by expanding medical services to not just married women, but to include services for all mothers, as well as men (for vasectomies) #humforum18
Affiliate PP clinics were women-led, volunteer-run endeavors. Sustaining local support was important to the success of community clinics (the first three buildings that housed the clinic were donated). #humforum18
Contraception was not decriminalizes until 1965 with Griswold v. Connecticut, which is why its important that in the early days of the clinic, it was important to have the input of medical doctors. #humforum18 en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griswold_…
“It is a Planned Parenthood axiom that services expand more rapidly than income.” Planned Parenthood of MD was dedicated to alway provide services to the community regardless of ability of funds. #humforum18
Many neighborhood “clinics” consisted of two hour visits that took place in hospitals, church basements, the top floor of a pharmacy, and even a mobile unit #humforum18
An important aspect of MD @PPFA was its connection to the Baltimore Jewish community. This might be the influence of Bessie Moses, in addition to the theological tenants of Judaism towards family planning #humforum18
In 1964, MD @PPFA was the first clinic in the country to run weekly family planning clinics #humforum18
The norm in Baltimore was that medical services were segregated. MD @PPFA worked around this by having dedicated service hours for WOC #humforum18

In the 1960s, when President Lyndon Johnson allowed for federal funds to fund Planned Parenthood, the Ashland Avenue Clinic in East Baltimore was the first to apply #humforum18
