The White House Correspondents Dinner doesn’t honor our free press. It makes a mockery of it by showing just how cozy politicians are with the press & how easily reporters can be charmed into giving favorable coverage.
I love a good joke, but the very idea of the WHCD is not funny at all.
Here’s journalist David Gregory dancing while Karl Rove raps, one month after Robert Novak testified that Rove was his 2nd source in the outing of undercover CIA operative Valerie Plame. It’s an outrage.

@benwikler which is, of course, the point. If the Trump administration fears peaceful protests by angry and disgusted Americans, then they should consider changing the policies of their administration — not the National Park Service.

To male TV writers who didn’t get staffed this season:

1. I’m sorry. I’ve been there. It sucks.

2. If your agent told you that you didn’t get staffed because of #MeToo, that’s bullshit. And here’s why:
A woman didn’t take your job. One of the many, many other men who got staffed this season took your job.
While there are now a few shows with all-female or majority-female writing staffs, the overwhelming majority of employed TV writers are still male. (Despite the fact that women make up 51% of the population.)

1/ I attended the White House Correspondents Dinner for nearly 20 years. Attendance was expected by my bosses. This was before the big celebrity influx. But I still hated it. As soon as I could, I stopped going, even though I was still invited.
2/ In those days, the big highlight was that the president got to be funny and sarcastic. This was at a time when presidents weren’t on TV speaking - formally or informally- almost daily. So it could be fun to hear.
3/ I sometimes enjoyed the presidential talks, but can’t remember any of the comedians. And the whole thing felt creepy and phony. DC journalists and those they cover needn’t hate each other, as they often do today. But they should have an arms-length relationship.
