I wanted to like this piece. I really did. But the number of misses here are just overwhelming. This article is superficially positive but the condescension throughout is hard to miss for anyone paying attention.
"All We Want to Do Is Eat Junk" --> and food that helps prepare for the incredible mental challenge. Feels like patronizing headlines are a mainstream media requirement at this point.
"Movie theater attendance hit a 25-year low in 2017, while 638,000 tuned in to watch Drake play Fortnite recently." --> and, you know, Ninja... the one who was actually streaming. How can you write an extensive article about Fortnite and not mention him once?
"And much of it is powered by the obsession with one game: Fortnite" --> let's see how long we can go conflating Fortnite w/ esports. Fortnite is amazing and the growth has been insane, but the distinction isn't that nuanced and yet here we are again.
"the periodic shrieks of “shoutcasters,” who comment on game play for live streams that tens of thousands watch." --> I mean, come on. Would you ever describe a sports broadcast that way?
I could go on and on, but what's the point. I expect it at this point - guess that means I need to learn to live with it.
