LOL, NO. A thread. [1/10]
I’m going to skip over all the (impenetrable, fittingly enough) wittering about the redistribution of sex - and omg, it’s an tenuous take - and focus on the sex robots. Because of course. [2/10]
I’ve delved into incels’ views on sex robots. It’s as messed up as you might expect: a desire to replace women - preferably in a violent and permanent way. [3/10]
First, sex robots don’t quite exist. They almost do, for a certain value of the word “robot”. Will they ever be mainstream? I’m not convinced. This is niche stuff. But hey, so are incels, one hopes. [4/10]
Second, the people who own high-end sex/love dolls come from many different walks of life and are overwhelmingly respectful and reverential of them. Please don’t conflate these people with violent men who feel that women owe them sex. [5/10]
Third, Douthat lumps sex workers in with sex robots. Wtf? Sex workers are people. Do not expect sex workers to provide a service of sex to violent misogynists under some redistribution of ‘rights’. [6/10]
Fourth, perhaps sex robots ARE a solution to incels’ entirely unreasonable demands that they get laid and eradicate women. I doubt it. Even if sex robots get much more advanced, these men are not going to change their views just because they can stick their dick in them. [7/10]
The people interested in owning sex robots are, by and large, either fetishists or people seeking companionship. Men who would enact violence on them seem to be in a very small minority. [8/10]
(And if you’ve seen news headlines suggesting a sex robot was “mauled” at a trade show, that’s a huge misreading of what happened - that was not an act of sexual violence. That was thousands of people being told they could touch a delicate object.) [9/10]
Ugh. It’s early and I haven’t had coffee. In summary, not only is Douthat’s logic around sexual ‘rights’ rubbish, but I’m here to tell you that a) suggesting sex workers redistribute sex to incels is throwing women to the wolves; and b) sex robots won’t cure misogyny. [10a/10]
(p.s. My book delves into this further and more coherently than just-awake me on twitter.)[END]
