1) "...And during the few moments that we have left, we want to have just an off-the-cuff chat between you and me — us. We want to talk right down to earth in a language that everybody here can easily understand." Malcolm X
2) What do I want to talk about? Plato's Allegory of the Cave. It really is a brilliant little allegory. You should study it. But I'll broadstroke it for my purposes.
3) There is a cave, wrapped in darkness. But, a light shines in, and the reflections and shadows play on the wall. The people living inside the cave, well, they're obsessed with the reflections. Those images become their whole world
4) A few people turn around, though, and they start following the light. What do they see?
5) They see OUTSIDE. They see this wide wondrous world with all the light and color they could imagine. Water that isn't covered in dirt. Food other than cave moss and mushrooms. So many corners everyone can get their own corner to poop in rather than a community poop corner.
6) So they turn around, and they say to the rest of the cave people, "Hey, those random fuzzy things you see on the wall? Those are shadows of CATS, and they are SO MUCH CUTER in person than just shadows and reflections! Come on, we can show you!"
7) But the rest of the cave people... they don't listen. They tell the explorers to stfu and watch the cave reflections and shadows.
8) Twitter is the cave. The random bullshit we see that we have to wait 24 hours (or 24 minutes in the case of @IngrahamAngle) to check if its even REAL. What @CNN, @washingtonpost, @NBCNews tries to tell us is often a fever dream of a journoperative and at least mostly untrue.
9) But we here in our little corner of Twitter, me, you, us, we've seen light. We've turned around and looked outside. We see what it is like to win. We see what it is like to live in a country with getting towards 4% gdp growth, and thinking, "we want to hit 5%."
10) But we're told to stfu. We're mass reported. Twitter's own blog post admits that the vast majority of the reports go towards 1% of the userbase, and that the almost all of the posts being reported fall within the rules.
11) But Twitter is the cave. Twitter does not want us turning around and looking into the light.
12) Twitter wants to keep us all in the cave looking at reflections and shadows.
13) Does Twitter punish those who are abusing the reporting system over hurt feelings? No.
14) Twitter punishes those being told to stfu. Twitter gives those telling us to stfu the power to actually gag and keep us from being heard. Twitter has created a Complainocracy.
15) The people who complain the most get to decide who doesn't get to speak within the cave. And the people wanting to watch the reflections and shadows, they are LOUD.
16) Now for the part of the allegory of the cave that you probably don't know about.
17) What happened to those who saw the light, the real life cats, the opportunity to each have their own poop corner? Did they ever get the rest to turn around? No. No they didn't.
18) Don't get me wrong. They tried. Ohhhh, they tried. The world outside was too wondrous for them not to try.
19) But then the people in the cave fucking killed them.
20) The people in the cave wanted to keep their reflections and shadows so much that they killed those who had seen the light so it wouldn't interrupt the reflections and shadows.
21) We've seen the light. We are here because we're shouting into the cave for people to turn around.
22) If they rip out my tongue, I will write. If they rip off my hands, I will stand beside any still standing for the light.
23) But I am like those who saw the light. They're going to have to fucking kill me to knock me off this platform.
24) I don't care how much they restrict my account. If they want me to stop telling people to turn around and see the light, they are going to have to come down here and ban me.
25) Shadowbans? Limited account status? No. Come here, to my face, and tell me you don't want me in the cave, and fucking delete me.
26) 'Til you've got the testicular fortitude to do that @jack, I'm here to stay, telling people about the light. /end
