NYT casually drops a kind-of mea culpa for its infamous 10/31/2016 "Investigating Donald Trump, F.B.I. Sees No Clear Link to Russia" story toward the end of a long piece on the early days of the Russia investigation nytimes.com/2018/05/16/us/…
Good, in a kind of meta way? "We fucked up, and now it's part of history so we have to find a way to refer to it when covering Trump-Russia." But nothing resembling true institutional accountability on what went wrong here.
.@ThePlumLineGS observes that the 10th paragraph of the original story (which the new story points to as the actual news of an investigation underway) goes out of its way to soft-pedal the investigation
Also not clear why that 10th paragraph is deemed so important. It contains some context on how it began, but the story refers to the fact of the investigation throughout.
Rereading the 10/2016 story, it's striking how poorly framed it is. The story is clearly a straightforward "FBI investigates Russia & Trump campaign" – not "FBI finds nothing on Russia & Trump campaign, though investigation – which BTW you haven't heard about before – continues"
