It blows my mind that "the state" (platforms) have gotten things to a place where "the people" (app developers) could believe this is a real concern.

It's happening again! I'm giving out three $1,000 grants for whatever you want: heliumgrant.org. A few notes:
1) Last year, I felt pressure to turn this into a bigger program, and while flattering, it was actually kind of stressful to consider. After thinking about it, I realized that I get the most pleasure out of this as a simple, personal side project.
I want an easy way to re-allocate my income, but I'm not trying to "start a thing" (though someone else should!): I'm quite happy spending my finite brain time tackling the problems in my day job. So I've set up this program to be as self-serve as possible.

#IAmTheBar I diverge from Chris on this - I think as a matter of principle, it should be possible to make a living doing exclusively criminal legal aid. We wouldn't tell nurses to supplement an insufficient NHS income by doing private work.

Stage 1: Do unpaid work for yourself

Stage 2: Use that as leverage to negotiate a position where you get paid to do work for others

Stage 3: Save up enough so you can be free to do more, higher-quality unpaid work for yourself <--- I am currently here

Stage 4: We’ll see
I have paid every intern that’s ever worked for me (both at ReferralCandy and @jibabom) and I would never do an unpaid internship myself - I personally can’t respect anybody who doesn’t pay their staff, and I can’t work for anybody I don’t respect.

That said...
... I have gotten a steady stream of paid job offers ever since I was ~17.

This is because employers know what I’ve done + they know what I’m worth. They know that bc of the work I’ve published in the public domain... that nobody paid me to do.

(I never did college/Uni btw)

hi, can we talk a little bit about what a problem the idealization of "passion" is in the tech industry? (in hiring, promotion, project definition) & even more perhaps in mission-oriented tech? /1

Alright, about this table. As I understand it, it wasn’t just a table, it was also the chairs and a hutch. All of which were custom built and made of hardwood.
First, I’m not defending Ben Carson flouting a $5000 max purchase rule, or government spending lavishly. I’m a conservative. If it were up to me all government buildings would be bare concrete blocks, and employees would wear burlap clothes and be fed community gruel.
But it’s not up to me, which is why we have 21 trillion in national debt. But that’s a whole other conversation entirely. The bulk of the argument seems to be the cost of the table. In the corporate, government, or even nonprofit world, that’s not out of line on price.
