Given enough time, privilege, power, protection & prestige, any network of people - no matter how pure their original purpose - can transmute into a web. We can be in a web & not even know it. A few signs:
1. It gets really sticky. Institutionally speaking, even incestuously so.
Black & white turns webby gray. Protecting the network is paramount. Rules bend to protect those most important to the network still self-defined by its original noble purpose. Those outside the web can see that what bent broke.
2. It’s hard to recognize spiders from inside a web.
Spiders by their very nature are captivating. Their habitat is, after all, sustained by a web. Woven in the dark, it shimmers bright in the day. Spiders don’t sting all their prey. They can be sweet. Parentish. Take Charlotte, for instance. Who wouldn’t want in Charlotte’s web??
3. This is the worst one of all. Sometimes we are so wound up in the web, we don’t realize we are one of the spiders. We thought we were flies. Moths. Anything but spiders. And maybe some of us really were. Here’s the good news. By the time we see the web, we are on our way out.
Bottom line: Many of us are in decision-making environments regarding legitimate & often great networks of people. Let these words sound a loud alarm whether they’re from our mouths or others’.

“We’re in a sticky situation.”

Look for the web. 9X out of 10, there will be one.
