It’s (thankfully) been a minute since I was active on night twitter, but the @LPE_Project #UBI symposium is so rich, I’m eroding my own norms 🙀! Time to talk about our lovely monetary consumption (& production...) economy!
First things first, read the intro! @NoahZatz did a characteristically thoughtful job introducing analytical themes and outlining the contours of the ensuing conversation. You simply love to read it. (Also...the links…the links…the memories...🔗🍻)

“Even the most progressive nation-based approach to basic income faces a fundamental justice challenge in the reality of human mobility.”

I seem to have time this summer to read another intriguing book by a #MMT scholar. So, what follows is some remarks on @ptcherneva's "The Case for a Job Guarantee".

1) From the top a very readable and eloquent presentation - I like the compactness of this book series.

(...)
2) It is difficult to find more timely subject for non-fiction book. @ptcherneva portrays nicely why everbody should be interested in #JobGuarantee proposal. Everyday examples in the introduction bring the unemployment question to right level of abstraction.

(To be continued...)
3) Why do we need #JobGuarantee? Because the current policy regime relying on the idea of natural unemployment (NAIRU) is theoretically flawed and morally questionable. The relation between inflation and employment is at best shady. The RIGHT level of unemployment is zero.

Some remarks on @StephanieKelton great book "The Deficit Myth".

1) It is a fabulous popularization of #MMT (neo-chartalism).
2) The division between Currency-User and Currency-Issuer is explained in a very clear manner - will be THE eye-opener for many.

(To be continued...)
3) Key principle (of #MMT) is to redefine "balanced" in economic policy and move the focus from balancing government spending and taxes to "balancing" full employment and price stability.
4) Changing NAIRU oriented policies to Job Guarantee is the main tool.

(To be continued.)
5) Ditching the NAIRU (or any natural unemployment rate) concept is very important also theoretically. #MMT claims that there is not straightforward relation between unemployment and inflation, the latter being much more complex phenomenon than mainstream view assumes.

So @NaomiAKlein made some important points on the @PitchforkEcon podcast about neoliberalism and the #GND. She said that while the popularity of purist neoliberal doctrine is not as popular pervasive, its success has been in convincingly asserting that #thereisnoalternative /1
This is because neoliberalism has effectively captured the public imagination in two critical ways. 1) Framing debates about Capitalism under the assumption that it is an immutable indivisible totality, while they themselves understand and act on the assumption it is not /2
Considerable energy is spent debating under the premise that the only contributions towards systemic alternatives must clearly guarantee the overcoming of the capitalist totality from the onset. Neoliberals however have spent 40 years shaping institutions to their liking /3

We need a #GreenNewDeal and #JG. Most people aren't socialpathic. In their jobs, they don't want to work on making the planet unlivable for their children, they don't want to engage in fraud or corruption, they don't want to stand by while their coworkers are harassed and abused.
Most people don't want to build systems of mass surveillance, psychological manipulation, and autonomous weapons. Most people don't want to work on how to exploit others more and more. But fear, fear of unemployment and loss of livelihood gets people to work rapidly on all these.
This fear is real. Whistleblowers are completely destroyed in this system. This is a system of socialpaths, by socialpaths, for socialpaths. With impending climate catastrophe and massive concentration of autonomous means of violence, we need a new system immediately.

I spoke with @worldfinance about #MMT and appreciate how this piece tackled some misconceptions and overlooked aspects.

Some additional points that we didn't get to discuss w/ the author. The article says: the #jobguarantee would be "hugely expensive". On the contrary. The enormous costs of unemployment & poverty is what's "hugely expensive". The #JobGuarantee controls & prevents these costs.
The #JG is anti-cyclical & by design it 'controls' spending on employment to be at the right level. It anchors wages at the bottom-another key anti-inflationary feature

The #JobGuarantee is more than a price stabilizing tool, or a "buffer stock of labor" to keep ready for private sector employers. It IS those things, but more importantly it's a life changing policy that will eliminate involuntary unemployment. And for me it's personal.. 1/
My son Jared turns 7 in a few weeks. He was 3 when he was diagnosed with autism. The official diagnosis wasn't a surprise to me, it was almost like diagnosing my daughter with curly hair. We knew. I WAS surprised however when I heard of the unemployment #'s for autistic adults 2/
"There will be 500,000 adults on the autism spectrum aging into adulthood over the next 10 years. Yet a whopping 85% of college grads affected by autism are unemployed, compared to the national unemployment rate of 4.5%" (2017) 3/

Almost 20 yrs ago (1999), Randy Wray, @mattybram, @ptcherneva and I brought the Center for Full Employment & Price Stability to #UMKC. For two decades, we hosted conferences, advised policmakers, and published volumes of research on the #JobGuarantee.
Our doctoral program produced dozens of students who wrote their dissertations on some aspect of the #JobGuarantee. People like @FadhelKaboub now run their own Institutes with the #JG at the core.
Point is, we’ve been at this a for a very long time. Sometimes it felt like a losing battle. But here we are today with #JG in the headlines every day.
