being introduced by @SarahHyder
✨We are all excited to hear from Dr. Renu Swarup @RenuSwarup, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology @DBTIndia, Govt of India.
Dr. Renu Swarup @RenuSwarup congratulates @spf and #STIP2020 for engaging a large mass of the public and reaching the remotest parts.
Dr. Renu Swarup's @RenuSwarup initial comments
The conversation is steering up for the one-to-one conversation between @RenuSwarup & @SarahHyder with an inquisitive discussion.👥🗣️
On experience gained from India’s #BiotechnologyVision & #Strategy 2001 and National #BiotechnologyDevelopment Strategy 2007:
Dr. Renu Swarup @RenuSwarup highlights:
🔷Biotechnology can move forward only with #disruptive and #OutoftheBox ideas.
🔷Revamping our Biotechnology sector can play a central role in key activities.
🔷Cuts across horizontals and verticals.
🔷Biotech is not just about the conventional stream.
For example, @wellcometrust / DBT India Alliance @India_Alliance @DBTIndia looks across several sectors
pointing out problems of #early #career #researchers (ECRs) @SarahHyder: challenges with #publishing, #funding and #careerprogression
👉The #pandemic has brought to fore these vulnerabilities systemic interventions to better support ECRs
In response @RenuSwarup:
💪We need to strengthen the #education system👩🎓🧑🏫
💪Need #quality human resource🧑🤝🧑
💪We need to look at innovative ways of #financing💰
📌
"We need to look at #collaborations and #partnerships.
Look at opportunities to tap in and bring newer opportunities for independent research opportunity to build the next line of leadership in S&T, involve #diaspora and build strong #mentor groups,..
..move from single investigator project to multi-investigator project. Single country projects to multi-country projects." ☝️This requires team players and leadership qualities.
“Diaspora bring their work culture which we need to leverage on. We need to focus on strong mentor networks” @RenuSwarup @DBTIndia
Q from @SarahHyder about "Under-representation of #Women in #Science"@4womeninscience @womenintech@STEMWomen in the Indian science community.
@RenuSwarup is a role model
Dr. Swarup @RenuSwarup agrees on women in science is a topic very close to her heart💓
🙎♀️Underrepresentation of #women is due to lack of a strong base.
🙎♀️The base has to be strengthened by going back to the school and addressing #schooldropouts.
🙎♀️Look at the #rural sector and not just the urban children.
🙎♀️@dbt and @vigyanjyoti are having several programs to attract women to science.
"Once the strong base is built we should work on women leaders"
Message to young women leaders by @RenuSwarup @DBTIndia 🔊🔊
♦️Scientists may not be good communicators ♦️#sciencecommunicators #sciencecommercialisation is very important.
♦️Science should not just be communicated to society but also to the scientific community.
There is a need to reach universities and dissipate from elite institutes.
♦️Need to build city clusters, mentor and nurture tier 2 and tier 3 cities.
♦️Go deep down to the school level competitions @BIRAC_2012 Dr. Anil Gupta has been putting efforts.
2-way approach - Develop new technologies and involve them in developing new technologies.
@SarahHyder agrees that one size does not fit all in terms of #technology.
🌽🍒#Biotech Kisan Hubs have been set up by @DBTIndia- Scientists sit with farmers and address grassroot issues. Acceptance is large.🌿🍂
📌It’s the audiences’ turn now!! 🧑🤝🧑🧑🤝🧑🧑🤝🧑🧑🤝🧑🧑🤝🧑🧑🤝🧑🧑🤝🧑
@SarahHyder & @ChagunBasha taking up live Q’s from social media.
🔛Use #ChatWithRenuSwarup to put across your STIP2020 thoughts to @RenuSwarup
"Explore unchartered territory - Don't limit your vision” - @RenuSwarup
The important verticals -
🧑🤝🧑Human resource- capacity building
🤝Infrastructure - national or through international collaborations
🧪Science that goes behind this technology
✨Applications and end-users
💲Finances
#Atmanirbhar, building competencies. #STIP2020 and @DBTIndia initiatives for self-reliance in biotech innovation, competitive grants system is very important for capacity building. Identify key sectors for strategic competition eg #geneediting #datascience #quantum etc...
Build dedicated centers of excellence for new and emerging technologies, have a dedicated technology forecasting group. Centers for new and emerging technologies
📍CONES: How you place the cone is very important for competence building.
❓Q on #resources for doing science (are mostly from the government). How to address this? @ChagunBasha
🔵Everyone is an equal contributor eg. @BIRAC_2012 funds startups.
🔵Bring policy changes.
🔵Knowledge translational clusters- academia-industry and startups work seamlessly.
🔵Innovative models to enhance funding is important.
Partnerships come up with #mutual trust, common objective and shared goal and vision, @India_Alliance @melindagates foundation and many others in agriculture, cancer genome initiative. All partnerships are not just about funding. Knowledge exchange is also important.
💫Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovation (CEPI) @CEPIvaccines is a wonderful example for the strength of collaborations that was useful to fight the pandemic.
Collaborations should not be just by the centre but also involve states.
"How to get rid of the complaints that ‘policies are excellent but implementation is inefficient?'
@ChagunBasha asks
1. Implementation has to go down to granular level.
2. Identify point persons for implementation in terms of the first responsible person.
3. #STIP2020 is owned by everyone engaged in science.
4. Policy even though generic should have a clear implementation strategy.
5. Capacity-building should be pan India.
6. Mentor institutes
7. International collaborations
8. Overarching principals are required with clear implementation plan.
@RenuSwarup does not want to change in research culture at present. India has diversity which brings value and openness from diverse opinions.
We should change in terms of collaborating more, stronger teamwork , inclusivity.
@ChagunBasha appreciates the openness of the conversation and the clarity for achieving international connect at the granular level. Assures a collective national policy.
Vote of Thanks being extended by @ChagunBasha 🙏
Keep engaging, stay safe, and take care!
