So you're interested in making money as a freelance Web designer? I just closed another project for $1500 bucks working from my laptop.
Here are 10 things that I learned since starting my journey in web design 6 months ago, and what YOU need to know to get started.
I had "0" coding knowledge prior - I just studied marketing in college at the University of Florida.
Just get started. Learn and take action. Simple, but not easy.
I took a number of courses to learn code and read a ton of books. I'd recommend:
- "Cashvertising" by Drew Whitman
- "Creative, Inc.: The Ultimate Guide to Running a Successful Freelance Business"
- Udemy course on HTML and CSS by Jonas Schmedtmann
There are a ton of of online communities who have a wealth of valuable content for FREE. Facebook groups, online forums, Reddit, etc.
Look for a community that you fit in and provide value. They can help.
It looks pretty damn weird if you're offering your services as a Web Designer and you don't even have your own website, right?
Whether you're using Word press or HTML, create your OWN website ASAP.
You must have skin in the game.
Tell your friends. Your family. Co-workers. Post on Facebook and social media.
Let anyone and everyone know what you are doing, and how serious you are. Someone will give you an opportunity eventually.
The first few months 3 months can be tough getting clients.
No one knows you or what you can do. You have to build your portfolio.
If you have to work for free do it, but .........
ONLY if you know they will be a good clients and refer your work.
My first job was free for a woman who sold wedding decor locally.
She was always asking for changes, never satisfied, cheap, - and it was an overall stressful situation.
So I fired her.
Id reccommend avoiding sites like Fiverr and Upwork.
It helps me get a greater understanding of my clients business and it helps them to understand their business more.
The more you know about the clients business, the more they trust you and the more you put yourself above others trying to get their business.
Businesses don't care about the "cool" design features of the website you're creating.
They care about the BENEFITS the website will bring them.
How is your service helping their business reach their goals? What's the value?
I wasn't fully aware of this before, but its huge in having recurring relationships in business.
Leave an impact and create a great experience.
You don't make money by providing whatever service it is that you say you provide.
You make money by solving problems for a business.
- More leads/traffic
- Better conversion rates/
- Reducing cost
