It’s a dumb idea to shut down your business during public holidays and weekends, especially businesses that don’t have other channels of selling like website, telephone order etc.

Don’t do it.

Let me tell you why.

#thread
Let’s start with a FACT.

If your customers cannot reach you, they can’t buy from which means you can’t make money.

If your business/shop is not open and you don’t have other channels of selling like a website, then you can’t make money and your business will collapse.
This means that the period you are shut, you are not making money.

Hark unto me.

Let’s do some calculations.

How many weeks/weekends do we have in a year? 52. Saturdays and Sundays 52 times is 104.

Let’s add public holidays and maybe strikes.

Maybe we will have 120 days.
How many days do we have in a year? 365 (or 366) days.

So you shut down your business 120 times in 365 days. That is 1 in 3.

After every 3 days, you shut down your business for one day. You shut down your chance of making money and from satisfying and keeping customers.

Why?
Why do people people do it?

Someone said man must rest.

Well, man must rest does not mean business must rest. Your business should be available to be patronized.

Pick a personal test day and run a shift for your staff to accommodate weekends and holidays.
You claim man must rest. So if you own a radio station, you will shut down your transmitters and close during the holidays?

Imagine owning a hotel. Will you send your guests home? Does that mean you can’t rest? It’s not an excuse.

You are different from the business.
Ensure you open 99% of the time. Then ensure you have other means your customers can conduct business with you.

Website? Telephone order? Or even just a functional contact center that can keep your customers engaged until you open on a working day.

Never shut down totally.
