The people’s “informed consent” to #Brexit wasn’t given in 2016 because there was no deal to vote on. So we simply couldn’t judge at that point what Brexit terms would be in our best interests and those of our country....
That’s why today’s vote in @HouseofCommons matters. Parliament can’t do its job - your MP can’t make sure the final #Brexit deal is in your interests - if it doesn’t have a say. But the principle of Parliamentary sovereignty is even more important than that...
Our country works & avoids big abuses of power because the pillars of our constitution - Parliament, Govt & Law - keep each other in check. And Parliament is sovereign because it represents people. Betraying that is a betrayal of our people & all previous generations fought for

Tonight’s votes in @HouseofCommons on #Brexit were really quite shameful. The Government adopted changes that went against the proposals in its own white paper (that it had only agreed last Friday). It changed its position at the last minute
The first duty of Government is to do what’s right for our country and to be honest. This sort of last-minute change undermines both and I certainly couldn’t in all honesty support it. That would be politics at its worst....
Instead, the Government must face up to the #Brexit challenge, be honest with people about what’s possible and what isn’t, #SuspendA50 until it has worked out what it wants - and later offer a #2ndEUref once it has established good, realistic options for our country

With more turmoil looming over #Brexit this week, it's heartening to see support growing to #SuspendA50 and hold a #2ndEUref - most recently from @JustineGreening. What’s best for our country must be at the front of our minds
Like all who want #SuspendA50 & hold a #2ndEUref, I want time to do a decent deal then take stock and check that’s what people really want. It’s the only logical option for us all: country, party, EU and the rest of the world
We need time to determine the future of our country, & what our final Brexit position should be. We then need to put this back to people in a new vote. We must be sure that the Brexit we decide on (if we take this direction) is right. We mustn’t rush or act on this irrationally.

Unfortunately Ben is wrong here, Corbyn is following the agreed policy here because that policy let's him do exactly what he wants on Brexit, not what the members want

The policy is a well crafted stitch up
2) there's 2 consistent themes from Corbyn supporters
a) this is the policy Labour conference overwhelmingly supported
b) Corbyn's following that policy to the letter
Both of these are true, but neither stand up to critical examination if we're being honest
3) in terms of the first "this is the policy conference supported" well, as a remainer its essentially the same as the non meaningful vote May tried to create
May's choice was her deal or no. Deal which, if true, is no deal at all
It was the same with Labour conference policy

Brexit would make Metropolitan Elitism worse-

The Brexit vote was against our London-centric system. So if there's an economic hit because of a Brexit London voted against, Westminster would make sure the London Banking sector survived but everywhere else...
Many of the problems that pushed people to vote Brexit had nothing to do with the EU. One of those problems was the government choosing to protect the banks who caused the crash with bailouts while ordinary people just got austerity.
The rich took irresponsible risks with the country's future, but they were protected either by moving their money away or by the government and it was those with least who suffered the most.

1. The notion we should have a "people's vote" on the #Brexit deal is intellectually bankrupt. There is no possible way it could be an informed decision especially given the timeframe. That's what the remaons are counting on. It's dishonest to the core. (thread)
2. The 2016 referendum was a broader binary question on subordination to what is essentially a supreme government. That is a constitutional matter - basically who governs us and whether the EU makes our laws or not. The public are able to decide that much.
3. But being that most MPs still have no idea what a customs union is, and have no idea what the backstop means in reality, this is simply cannot be reduced to a popular vote. This is the bit we pay our politicians to do. That they do it badly is a separate issue.

One thing leavers were right about is that it's a lot easier to give power away than it is to get back. Having done so without consent we now see that we gave away more than our politicians realised. That's why they're not trusted and that's why compromise is impossible.

2. They tried to fob us off by telling us that no further powers would be given away but every piece of legislation passed by the EU is on some level an erosion of national sovereignty. All of it happening off the radar - adopting laws through statutory instrument.
3. That's why nobody believed Cameron when he said we could opt out of ever closer union. Nobody can make that claim. It's in the DNA of the EU and if you are a member then that is what you are subscribed to. Voters may influence the pace, but not the destination.

1) Thread - Corbyn, #Brexit & Labour democracy - let's just be honest, it's dead

Saddened but not surprised by this reversal by Labour Leadership.

Labour members overwhelmingly support a People's vote, and they have been comprehensively overridden

2) so, full disclosure, I'm not a Corbyn fan but I was absolutely prepared to "lay down arms" if something approaching a pro people's vote motion came out of last night's horsetrading. It didn't. A fudge came out, and that fudge was hardened into a pro brexit position
3) so what happened, and what does it mean? Quick summary
Well, clearly there is a growing pro remain/people's vote position in Labour - 9 out of 10 members support it & 150 CLPs sent in pro vote motions.

That's a staggering number and shows the concern of members

Now that Turkey is just decades away from joining the EU I am so relieved. all that Turkish EU membership required was a simultaneous act of mass political suicide by multiple East European governments and a few western ones too which is clearly very likely
