Freeland announces Canada is indeed imposing its retaliatory tariffs agains the U.S. on Sunday, Canada Day: "Canada has no choice but to retaliate with a measured, perfectly reciprocal, dollar-for-dollar response." Says they'll remain in place as long as Trump's tariffs do.
Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland: "We will not escalate, and we will not back down." She says she "cannot emphasize enough the regret" with which Canada is acting, but promises to retain "firm resolve."
Freeland says she's spoken to Lighthizer six times this week alone. She concludes by predicting that "common sense will prevail."
