X : What thoughts do you have on OpenStack?
Me : It blew its chance to be a huge impact on day one with some daft differentiate on APIs nonsense, a triumph of marketing over strategy / substance. Sucked a lot oxygen out of the space, now it's living in niches ...
... I somewhat regret putting them on stage at OSCON at the cloud summit back in 2010. I had high hopes, the original play was sound but it blew it day one. Made some people a lot of money which was not the purpose.
The original purpose was to create a competitive market of public providers to compete against AWS ... not to end up selling private clouds (a space with little future) on differentiated products. It's such a shame.
I know this was the original purpose - creating a competitive market of AWS cloned matching the EC2 / S3 APIs - because it's what I discussed with @dendrobates between Feb to April 2010.
Still, water under the bridge. The real war has been (and always was) in the framework as a utility service (serverless) space. That kicked off in 2014 and it's been all Amazon again. It is almost over and once again, people are focused on stuff that doesn't matter - containers.
There'll be the usual future cries of company CEOs claiming they will invest in, own or win the serverless space - all it demonstrates is a complete lack of understanding of economic patterns - it's like a chess player who has only the king standing claiming they will now win.
... they'll point to how serverless is a small % of the market, that it's early days, of security concerns, of how they alone can bring enterprise experience to serverless etc etc. They will fail to understand they have already lost.
