Do you remember when it seemed like everyone agreed walled gardens were shit? I do. We were right. They create echo chambers, content filters, and information monocultures, all terms taken with very negative interpretations here.
I remember a time when people didn't scoff at "information wants to be free". Now, Dyson manages to maintain its stranglehold on vacuum cleaner sales by advertising the number of patents it holds while producing some of the most overpriced plastic shit available.
Somehow, the entire "western" culture of this world is now infected by the need to equate malicious secret-keeping with value and authority.
This, by the way, is why actively censoring alt-right racists and fascists (who, for the most part, are not literal nazis, but are probably about as bad) is counterproductive. The mystique of suppressed information is attractive, and suppression just aids recruitment propaganda.
