A thread on why this view is not correct.

1. There is no evidence to demonstrate that people with a formal education can do a better job as elected representatives than those without. In fact, anecdotal evidence at the time the law was passed suggested the contrary. (1/n)

There were many such examples - especially - of women panchayat leaders who drew upon their own experiences of deprivation and lack of opportunity, to ensure that that did not continue. (2/n)
That, alone, is a good enough reason for why this law was wrong. Formal education has no necessary connection with the qualities required for good and competent political and administrative leadership.

But actually, this framing is itself suspect. (3/n)

Just finished Ahmed Saadawi's incredible Frankenstein in Baghdad. Reading it on the heels of Shadreck Chikoti's Azotus the Kingdom and Tade Thompson's Rosewater makes me feel that the most powerful, imaginative and cutting-edge SF today is no longer centred in the UK/US.
As instances of dystopic or semi-dystopic world-building Saadawi's disintegrating wartime Iraq, Thompson's near-future Lagos, or Chikoti's privatised African country feel far more vividly and urgently imagined than anything comparable that I've read recently out of "the West."
I suppose this isn't very surprising.

Abe and I had an interesting day. We did something new.
When G & I both had day jobs, it was a lot harder to keep this place up.
In the modern economy, there are no jobs in rural America that pay a living wage except Rich Farmer, and there aren't many openings for that.
First you have to inherit a fortune in land.
And for many of those years we lived on two different farms, each caring for our own and helping on the other. Less concentration on one place.
Working in Kansas City, from here, is 2 ½ to 3 hours a day commute.
In 5 years you spend one full year looking out the windshield.

Near the end of this month I will be presenting a paper at an academic conference in Lubbock, TX. Texas Tech houses the Vietnam Center and Archive, a rich resource for Vietnam War researchers. They host annual conferences about the war. This year is about 1968.
My paper is about the Hue Massacre. I would imagine that most Americans have at least heard of the My Lai massacre, an awful event where American troops slaughtered perhaps as many as 500 men, women, and children in some hamlets in northern South Vietnam.
Many books have been written about My Lai, and the details of the massacre are easily found on the web. My Lai is often brought up as the spectre that haunts our troops in every war. What is almost never mentioned is the Hue Massacre. It’s almost as if it never occurred.

2) Let us begin on page 3, the letter of the piece of Schiff, which was entered into the record I believe as a subtle way of embarrassing that Schiffhole for being such a whiny bitch.
3) The letter states as such: "I'm gonna say that I'm releasing my own memo reluctantly, but in reality I'm hopped up on fucking opioids and I didn't write the memo myself, one of my staffers whom I endlessly attempt to grope did."
