1st of all, it wasn't that long ago when Trump threatened Kim Jong un w "fire and fury." He needlessly escalated tensions. He would publicly shame his then Secretary of State Tillerson, saying that he was "wasting his time" negotiating w N Korea.

Obviously, it's better for everyone that Trump is now pursuing a diplomatic tone, instead of his hostile "fire and fury" bullsh*t that could escalate things and end all our lives.
But his drastic change in tone hasn't been explained. And his tactics now are being exploited by Kim

Trump's "fire and fury" strategy did not work (instead of making Kim afraid, he made us afraid); so Trump pivoted to the polar opposite extreme, where he made concessions to Kim Jong Un without getting anything in return.
