Republicans, in the tradition of Reagan, have traditionally supported neocon positions on Russia. If we look back at the two most recent GOP nominees (John McCain and Mitt Romney), we can see that they both took strong positions against Russia's goal of territorial expansion.
Things changed for the Republican Party when Putin's number bitch (Donald Trump) hijacked the party; he normalized Putin w constant praises; the GOP base no longer sees Russia or Putin as an imminent threat to Western interests.

This is problematic.
In 2016, RNC platform committee members insisted that the Trump campaign intervened to ease language on arming Ukrainians against Russian aggression. Many blamed longtime Kremlin lobbyist Paul Manafort for this. Manafort is now in jail, yet Trump is STILL espousing Putin's goals.
It was never just Manafort who was behind Trump campaign's pro-Kremlin overtures, but Trump himself.

Several pro-Kremlin Trump officials pleaded guilty to lying about their contacts w Russians. They're no long involved in Trump's circle, yet Trump is STILL pro-Kremlin.
