The open star cluster, Pleiades is known as miyay miyay in Gomeroi, meaning several girls. The miyay were considered to be beautiful women with long hair and bodies made of ice. They say that thunder in the winter is the miyay miyay playing and bathing.
A young hunter, Karambal fell in love with a beautiful miyay and stole her away from her sisters. The sisters retaliated and sent snow storms to punish him. When they realised they couldn't find her in all the snow, they took to the sky in search for summer to melt the ice.
The story contains both factual and cultural elements. It informs us that Pleiades appears in our skies during the summer and disappears in the winter. Winter is caused by the sisters, as a punishment for stealing woman that are of the wrong totem group.

One of my #Becauseofherwecan role models is another deadly #Martu woman - my auntie Doris Nugi Garimara Pilkington (1937 - 2014). She has inspired me to not give up on my vision of being a professional novelist.
Auntie Doris won the David Unaipon Award in 1990 (at the age of 53) for her novel Caprice: A Stockman's Daughter. Her second novel, Follow The Rabbit-Proof Fence was published in 1996 (children's version in 2006). And the sequel Under the Wintamarra Tree in 2002.
After the movie version of Rabbit-Proof Fence was released in 2002, Auntie Doris was catapulted on to the world stage. She travelled throughout Australia and overseas talking about the Stolen Generations. She met survivors, family, supporters, writers, popstars and world leaders.

2. On Sunday I listed the 15 lower house MPs I believe most likely to be headed out the door because they’re dual citizens. I could add about ten more, the tap never stops running, but for now this thread reviews the cases of one category of MP.
3. Either now, or later, you’ll ask yourself “who is this cassowary and how did he find out all this stuff?” Easy: I looked. I’ve spent nearly 100 hours on this. Also, I’m pretty good at patterns and analysis. I used to work as a journalist and in humanitarian relief.
