A question for religious studies folks: Trying to find some brief introductions to world religions for a class this fall, I was struck that most textbooks make no effort to include diverse voices. Is this not a thing in religious studies?
In African studies, there is considerable pressure now for publications to include African voices so that not just Westerners speak about Africa but people from within societies can speak from their own perspectives.
I'm surprised to find introduction to world religion texts where the chapters on Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam are written only by white Westerners. Is allowing folks from within a religious tradition a chance to describe their own tradition not an issue?
