The remarkable thing about this story is nobody from the NRA apparently thought more than two steps down the road on this issue. It seems to be a wider problem these days.

What was the end game for them?

Why did they not “war-game” possible outcomes of accepting Russian money?
Accepting $30M to use for political lobbying (against the law).

The NRA either failed to perform due diligence on Butina and Torshin, or decided that they could handle working with Torshin (known to be involved in Russian mafia).
Then the NRA decided to foment violence with those outrageous videos with whatshername while the domestic market for firearms collapsed.
AR pattern rifles have gone from $1200 to $400 in about 2 years while gun ownership per capita has been shrinking for years.
And because the NRA represents manufacturers and not citizens, they are doing whatever they can do to maintain firearms sales.
Therefore, the NRA has done the calculus and determined that deliberate destabilization of social order is worth a calculated monetary income.

But here is the deal… What is the end game for that strategy?

I can think of a couple of outcomes, and they are not pretty.
Are they that cynical as an organization that they are happy with civil unrest in order to sell firearms? Apparently so.

The NRA is also apparently fine with selling the United States of America out to the highest bidder and committing treason.
