Did you catch that op-ed at @Forbes over the weekend stating "Amazon Should Replace Local Libraries to Save Taxpayers Money"?

We very much disagree, and we've got the facts in this thread to prove it.
In 2016, Starbucks reported they had 12 million cardholders: fool.com/investing/2016…

In 2017, Pew Research reported that approximately 112 million adults had used a library card in the last year: pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017…
According to JustWatch.com , you can stream 4,894 titles on Netflix and 16,147 on Amazon. The total subscription cost is about $20 a month.

The Irondequoit Library offers free DVD and Blu-ray rentals, and our catalog currently includes around 16,000 titles.
As reported by Forbes, ebook sales dropped in 2017 while print sales rose.

"Online searches" is not a feature unique to Amazon Books. In addition to their home library's catalog, library users can search more than 10,000 libraries worldwide using WorldCat: worldcat.org
An Amazon Prime subscription is $99 a year and requires additional purchases to receive books. Irondequoit homeowners pay under $30 in taxes to support the library and can borrow as many books as they'd like for free.
We're just librarians, not economists like the author of the essay, but we're pretty sure $30 < $99.

Joshua was very much a rainbow baby 🌈 and we were so excited and over the moon when I finally made it into the second trimester. (Alex and I are both big rugby fans!)
I was working as a 1st year Registrar in A&E when I suddenly broke my waters at 24 weeks. I was transferred to Southampton @UHSFT who have a specialist level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. They were wonderful, and did everything they could to stop my labour over Father’s Day.

Do you not understand how unbelievably classist it is to say that everyone has a Netflix account or an Amazon Prime account? I know that people who you report on don't worry about those subscription prices, but for many lower income folks those CAN BE luxuries.
And they might not own a Kindle to take advantage of an ereader. So if they do read, it has to be at a computer. Which, again, not everyone is going to have. Did you know that public #libraries serve *everyone*, including *gasp* THE POOR?
