My Patreon, which has now been extended twice from its original one-year goal--moving is expensive, and chemotherapy is doubly so--offers a new piece of fiction every month, at all pledge levels.
For a dollar--one single dollar--you can receive short stories and novellas of all types, from stand-alones like "From A to Z in the Book of Changes" and "The Levee Was Dry" to exciting installments in my existing franchises.
I've said before that I can't be on Team Illegal Downloads, because this is my livelihood, but that I have sympathy for some of the reasons some people have to face that choice.
I've been poor enough that the "books or food" choice was very, very literal. Illegal downloads didn't exist when I was at that level of poverty, so I chose libraries and re-reading, but I can't promise I'd make that same choice today.
I've been frustrated by geo-locking of books and cinema I wanted to enjoy, and I recognize that my solution (import the hardcopy from the region where it's printed) isn't available for everyone.
And while I love my publishers, and feel they add a lot of value to my endeavors, I can at least understand the incorrect assumptions that lead to people deciding illegal downloads are okay because they only hurt a corporation, not the actual author.
(This is, by the way, SO incorrect. Publishers are made up of people. When you try to cut off their income streams, it's not just authors who suffer, it's editors, and cover designers, and lots of other people who enjoy eating.)
But even if I were to accept all three of these excuses as 100% accurate and valid and true and good, how the FUCK does that justify people taking the stories from my Patreon, which cost $1 a month, straight to me, no geo-locking, and putting them up on download sites?
Come on. This is not cool. Illegal downloads are never cool, but again, there are, at least, some conversations to be had around the topic: it's complicated.
When you steal from my Patreon, you are literally stealing DIRECTLY FROM ME. No middle man. No geo-locking to evade, no DRM to protest against, nothing. You're stealing my cat food budget.
Please feed my cats instead of illegally downloading my work.
