This looks very much like the first few yrs of GW Bush's presidency. It took yrs for his policies to start impacting the economic health built under Clinton. When it finally did, we ended up with the worst economy since 1930s. So don't cheer this much. Why? Short thread. /1
In a Vanity Fair article from near the end of Bush's presidency, we find a description that sounds much like today's. Unemployment was low. But we had accummulated a massive debt & deficit, with rising oil prices & an economy that favored the rich. /2
When Bush took office, the economy was excellent. We had a budget SURPLUS. Productivity was growing. But as soon as Bush took office, massive tax cuts were given to the rich. The downhill dive had begun. Sound familiar? /3
For 6 yrs, the Bush Admin kept talking about a growing economy. But we all know who it really helped: the rich. A 30yo male was making 12% less than his father did 30 yrs before at same age. Millions more were in poverty than had been in the yr before Bush became president. /4
Bush began a war in Iraq (on top of the one in Afghanistan) 3 yrs in, & we had the worst economic turnaround since WW2. /5
The author of this article felt it would take generations to recover. Fortunately, along came Barack Obama. We had steady growth throughout his presidency. Things were looking up far more quickly than many economists expected. Dems rescued us from yet another R crash. /6
In short, don't be fooled by Trump's "great numbers" speech. We're not even 2 yrs into his presidency. We're facing crises of types we've never before seen. Trump is still riding the coattails of the Dem president before him, & as history has shown us, that ends yrs later. /7
Here's the article I quoted above. /end
