/ We obtained police reports and call logs from more than two-thirds of the shelters housing immigrant children. In the following tweets, we’ll share some of the most disturbing records we found.
/ In 2015, a 15-year-old Honduran boy awoke in his Tucson, AZ immigrant shelter multiple times to find a youth care worker tickling his stomach and rubbing his penis.
/ The worker was later convicted of molestation.
/ In 2017, a 17-year-old Honduran boy reported being sexually harassed and groped by a staff member at a Tucson shelter. The boy locked himself in a bathroom stall when days later he was approached again.
/ In 2016, a 15-year-old boy at a shelter in Bethlehem, PA reported that he was forced into oral sex by another boy at the shelter.
/ But the Salisbury Township Police Department closed the case one month later, citing “conflicting accounts of the events.”
/ Additional police reports & court records include descriptions of staff members sending nude photos to minors and a teenager threatening to rape another teen. In total, we have records of 125 calls reporting sex offenses at shelters that primarily serve immigrant youth.
/ The Department of Health and Human Services’ director of refugee resettlement programs, Scott Lloyd, declined our request for an interview. The agency said it has a zero-tolerance policy for all forms of sexual abuse or inappropriate behavior at shelters.
/ Read more about our investigation into sexual abuse at immigrant youth shelters:
