/ Unless you go back and look at the tweets in context of what was in her feed and being said to her, you're just accepting at least a portion of somebody else's take—sincere or pure bad-faith—about what they say. And that, I feel confident, nobody has done.
/ I've followed Sarah since before 2014. I saw the whole Jacobinghazi spat go down. I also know how much horrible trolling she, and any women weighing in on tech issues in particular, were getting from GamerGaters.
/ That was the context, writ large. And more small bore than that she, in particular, was constantly being harassed on Twitter by "white men" attacking "SJW anti-gamers." I know because I reported some people who did it. So why don't we all save the half-informed takes.
/ Finally if Twitter had listened to women and people of color about the targeted campaigns of abuse on this platform back then, this place wouldn't be the cesspool it is today. And this kind of bullshit wouldn't persist.
/ And, just so I'm clear: I'm not trying to dunk on Will. He's one person in a chain of many similar chains of smart (white male) pundits, making, I'm sure, a sincere pleas for more civility on Twitter.com. It's just that SmartWhiteMalePundits don't see what we see.
/ If people direct you to tweets, especially screen shots, you should assume there's at least a 50 percent change that the outrage began in bad faith. And an almost 100% chance it's being fueled by some acting in bad faith.
