I think this also speaks to the North American desire to label anything produced outside of the English speaking world as foreign and different. It sure would be cool if the average English speaker just thought of anime and manga simply as cartoons ✌️
I should add: I don't have a dog in this fight. Call these animated productions whatever you like and I'll know what you mean through context.
Also obviously I do use the term "anime" quite frequently myself.
