(1) Religious freedom thread.

"the law [...] doesn't just apply to protect popular religious beliefs: it does perhaps its most important work in protecting unpopular religious beliefs, vindicating this nation's long-held aspiration to serve as a refuge of religious tolerance"
(2) That quote is from Justice Gorsuch and is referenced in a WaPo article: washingtonpost.com/politics/court…
(3) Like the right to keep and bear arms, the right to religious freedom is a part of the US Constitution that promotes your freedom whether you partake of the subject matter or not. A non gun owning, non religious American still needs these protections.
(4) Disputes over the religious freedom part of 1A have ripple effects throughout American life, eg healthcare coverage, public school curricula, and the freedom to run your own business as you see fit.
(5) The revisionist historians of the Left treat what Gorsuch calls "this nation's long-held aspiration to serve as a refuge of religious tolerance" as an anachronism. The flame of religious freedom was never extinguished. Americans got it going again in 2016 by electing Trump.
(6) Religious freedom was an absolutely foundational part of the Age of Enlightenment. The Age that secular liberals assert that they revere so much. Their classical liberal forebears like JFK certainly did. Then Marxism took over the Democrat party.
(7) So much of the Bill of Rights is now an annoyance to the Left, especially 1A. Meanwhile, the adults in the room, the Trump admin, are quietly threading 1A's religious freedom protections through the exec branch, eg the new civil rights unit in the DOJ, & the State Dept unit.
(8) The DOJ's civil rights division will now invest in upholding the Constitution's religious freedom provisions at home, while the State Dept's Ambassador At Large speaks up for the American view of human rights that values religious freedom around the world.
(9) The US has considerable status and resources to promote religious freedom abroad. The quickest actions were to tweak the funding and support given in other countries. For example, the US will administer certain aid programs itself rather than entrusting them to the UN.
(10) The religious persecution of minority groups, especially in Africa, the Middle East and Asia, is something that is generally more understood and accepted as fact by Republican voters than it is by Democrat voters.
(11) I could talk about this subject all day, I love it. I'm very much looking forward to reading Justice Gorsuch's opinions on upcoming SCOTUS cases. The thought of 1-3 more originalists joining him there in the coming years is pure delight. #ThankYouTrump🇺🇸❤️👨‍⚖️
