To be clear, we don’t know if these allegations are true, just that they exist. And the company probably can’t comment publicly while the litigation is pending
A few more people have contacted me privately to say that these allegations are false / Pinscreen's results are real. Some of the people who have contacted me privately are people I know from before from other contexts who don't have a stake in Pinscreen

Notebooks generally don’t play very friendly with source control tools such as git

I suspect that peer review *actually causes* rather than mitigates many of the “troubling trends” recently identified by @zacharylipton and Jacob Steinhardt: arxiv.org/abs/1807.03341
I frequently serve as an area chair and I manage a small research group, so overall I see a lot of reviews of both my group’s work and others’ work
It’s very common for reviewers to read empirical papers and complain that there is no “theory”. But they don’t ask for theory to address any specific question. I think they are just looking for an easy reason to reject—-they skim and don’t see scary equations.

A math trick I like a lot is the approach to taking derivatives using hyperreal numbers. Thread:
For this trick we introduce a new kind of number, called an infinitesimal hyperreal number. Imagine we have some number epsilon, such that epsilon > 0 but epsilon < x for all positive real numbers x. Imagine that we can use algebra to manipulate epsilon like any other variable.
Now we can compute derivatives just by using "plug-and-chug" algebra on the expression f'(x) = real_part(f(x+epsilon) - f(x)) / epsilon) where the "real_part" function just rounds off the infinitesimal part of some expression

The late prime minister was an erudite scholar who wrote extensively about the nation-state, multiculturalism and the notion of citizenship.
The Essential Trudeau, edited by Ron Graham, is a collection of PET’s writings on various issues and political philosophy. And the 1998 book includes updated versions of articles Trudeau wrote in the 1960s.

I've been meaning to write about this for some time but I rarely write atm and this is a depressing topic. Anger helps me write however and boy am I angry. Sooooo, I know some want to reclaim/recover r/MachineLearning (r/ML) but I don't think that's even feasible. Tweetstorm:
Underlying broader @reddit community problems for r/ML (and other r/...):
- Anonymity allows incivility
- Brigades can easily "launch" from other subreddits (i.e. "We hate women" subreddits)
- r/Futurism and other "science (fiction)" subreddits leak in meaning results are hyped
Now, to my extreme straw breaking... I knew r/ML had problems but primarily just left the community, maybe occasionally seeing it on my @reddit feed. Then someone posted my article on bias in the ML community to r/ML. It wasn't a hard hitting article.
