Chairman Grassley, as you will recall, I opposed Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination to the DC Circuit in 2006 because I believed he was a political operative not suited for the bench. Given what we have learned since that time, I still believe that today.
The small percentage of Brett Kavanaugh’s record that is public is cause for great concern, including his decisions related to our health care law, women’s constitutional rights & his dangerously expansive beliefs about presidential power and accountability.
But here’s the problem. Despite all these reasons to oppose Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination, the bulk of his record is being kept hidden from the public. #WhatAreTheyHiding
Judge Kavanaugh himself said his time as Staff Secretary was “formative” & “instructive” to him as a judge—and Republicans won’t agree to even review those docs.
This is not about me. The Senate & the American people deserve to have a full vetting of the nominee, just like you asked for and Democrats gave you for Justice Kagan. Republicans should want to see these documents just as much as Democrats.
And your process for getting the tiny % of Kavanaugh’s WH documents you have actually requested is being led by a lawyer who not only has a partisan history—the American people learned this weekend that he used to report to Kavanaugh in the White House! nyti.ms/2O70F0c?smid=n…
This process is opaque, partisan, and unacceptable for a lifetime position on the highest court in the land. We have to ask: What are Republicans trying to hide?
