On This Day, 1989: George H.W. Bush signed a bill to bail out the nation’s savings and loans. In the late 1980s, more than 1,000 S&Ls—about 1/3 of them—had failed. The damage rippled across key sectors of the economy, including the mortgage and car loan industry
On This Day. 2001: George W. Bush said the federal government would fund stem cell research. It allowed funding on already extracted stem cells - but banned the extraction of additional ones from human embryos /1
Research on stem cells would, it was hoped, improve care—and ultimately speed cures—for diseases such as diabetes, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, stroke, burns, cancer and osteoarthritis
It's interesting to think back to that placid summer of 2001 - when the big stories were a series of shark attacks and the saga of a missing D.C. intern - Chandra Levy - and her involvement w/a Calif. Congressman, Gary Condit. It was all swept away on Sept. 11
