This is one reason I'm told Google is refusing to publicly discuss details about its China censorship plan: Beijing's censorship demands are a *state secret* & Google execs, who've been trying to ingratiate themselves w/ Communist Party officials, don't want to upset the regime.
That extract is from a Google's transparency report: transparencyreport.google.com/government-rem…
The Google transparency report is interesting b/c it shows in the last couple years a spike in requests from the Chinese government to remove content from Google platforms (like Drive, YouTube, Blogger, etc):
At the same time as the increase in requests, Google was working very hard behind closed doors to get closer to the Chinese government in order to ultimately obtain approval to relaunch the search engine there. I know correlation is not causation but this trend is worth noting.
The removal requests are significant because most Google-owned websites remain blocked in China, yet the Chinese government has still been demanding that Google delete people's content from them.
In some cases Google has resisted; in others, it has complied. That means the Chinese govt has on occasion successfully managed to remove content from the global internet that we all access, not just from the censored version of the internet that is accessible in China.
