Currently reading American War, and it's as good (and nightmare-inducing) as everybody says it is. amazon.com/American-War-O…
I have a really high tolerance for post-apocalyptic fiction. I can watch "The Road" and sleep like a baby. Whatever. But this book is disturbing on so many levels. I'm a believer in "as you sow, so shall you reap," & we have sowed so much & this book is a look at us reaping it.
The basic premise of the book is, "what if the US looked like Syria does right now?" So you have refugee camps with sections named for US states, & kids in filthy logo t-shirts for companies that no longer exist, & drone strikes & conscripts & rebel factions.
It's essentially, "what if all our MENA war chickens came home to roost." The level of poverty depicted in the book -- I saw some of that in the south growing up, & was around it from time to time. That's why it's super real to me.
