Theology by nature is always contextual. Self-identifying as Black, Latinx, Asian, etc. theology is a reminder to our White brothers and sisters that they aren't doing uncontextual theology, but are doing a form of White, European theology.
The failure of our White brothers and sisters to own the fact that they have been doing White, European theology has prevented many of them from seeing the worth and value of contextual theological from other vantage points. They have missed where the Holy Spirit has illuminated.
Living with the assumption that they are simply pursuing theology has rendered White brothers and sisters in a position that is unable to be sharpened as iron with iron by voices from the global south, immigrant churches, and historically marginalized Christians in our country.
Ultimately, White, European theology is not bad in and of itself if it sees itself as a facet of a large diamond of the church of Christ where the Holy Spirit leads and illuminates his truth. It is only when one facet claims to be the entire diamond that dangers arise.
Contrary to what some assert, a multivocality of perspectives and contexts for theology is not bending the knee to postmodernist relative truth. Rather, it is affirming the symphony of a "Pentecostal plurality" and submitting to one another across time and space.
Our contexts and perspectives do not change biblical truth. Yet, they inform, shape, and mold our experiential understanding of God's truth for all time in the here and now. His Word is an endless mine and we need to eyes and ears of a global body to mine its bountiful riches.
