Today at City Hall, Council is meeting to decide its response to Doug Ford's swipe at local democracy. I stand with all of you who have felt let down by your city's leadership these last few weeks, and I applaud those who are fighting for Toronto's interests. 1/3
But it didn't need to come to this. John Tory did nothing to stand up for Toronto when he first got wind of it after speaking with Doug Ford, and Doug Ford knew he could walk all over John Tory. 2/3
Doug Ford did this because he knew John Tory wouldn't fight this and he was right. Doug Ford didn’t tell the mayors of Ottawa or London or Kingston how to run their elections, but he did here because he knew John Tory wouldn’t stand up for TO. That's why we need a new mayor. 3/3

Everyone who rides the subway to work or school every day knows that we’ve reached a crisis point. You wait on a dangerously overcrowded platform as packed train after packed train passes you by. And when you finally get on, you’re crushed. Toronto commuters need relief, now. 1/4
We have the tools available to accelerate the Relief Line and get shovels in the ground — subway riders need relief, not reports. 2/4
People expect their Mayor to deliver, and our current leadership hasn’t gotten the job done. John Tory says the Relief Line subway is his top priority, but in four years it’s already fallen 18 months behind schedule. And his other transit plans are coming off the rails, too. 3/4

Last week made 19 years that I survived my suicide attempt. At the hospital I found out that I had been within five minutes of losing my life. Now it makes sense that these last two weeks have been a bit trying for me. I didn't realize I was coming up on that anniversary
I am in a much better place than I was back then but I still struggle. What I realized over the last few weeks is the tools that I have used to cope all these years have been to suppress my issues rather than to deal with them. I realized there is no shame in asking for help.
I figured out I can't change things & people but I can let it go & I can change my reaction & I can change my perspective on life. I just need to finally get the tools to help me get there. I want to be able to lead my best life possible & to enjoy it. I now know I deserve it .

Today I received an email from @DExEUgov one that reads like it comes from a parallel universe. A universe where negotiations are going well. One in which no deal is very unlikely, relationships are cordial and all is just lovely.
I'll post a THREAD. Judge for yourselves.
1/ Dept ex EU response to petition to remain if no deal can be agreed:

"Whilst striking a deal with our EU partners remains the outcome we expect, ‘no deal’ plans are well-developed and we stand ready to make a success of Brexit, whatever the outcome of our negotiations."
2/ We are leaving the EU. That’s what the British public voted for and that is what we will deliver.

Negotiations are progressing well and we are confident of a deal this autumn.

Last night, the SEC rejected an ETF proposal. It wasn’t the CBOE-backed proposal that has gotten people hyped, but a Winklevoss-Gemini proposal. Still, there are some interesting takeaways for understanding the potential for other on-deck ETF proposals. Quick summary: /1
2/ First, a primer on why there has been so much buzz on a bitcoin ETF for the last few weeks. In short, it’s about accessibility to institutional investors and another step in the maturation of the crypto asset class as a whole.
3/ Second, @AureliusBTC did a fantastic job TL;DRing this proposal rejection. One major difference between this one and the VanEck/SolidX is who they’re aimed at. Winklevoss ETF priced at 0.1 BTC for retail, VanEck/SolidX at 25 BTC just for institutional.

I keep thinking back to a discussion a few months on reddit about THE BELGARIAD. Several comments were made about it being cliche and pedestrian, and someone said, “Yeah, it’s a fine story, but it’s never going to be a classic.”
And all I could think to respond was, “It’s over thirty years later and we’re still talking about it. How is that NOT ‘a classic’?
But that got me thinking- I cite THE BELGARIAD (and THE MALLOREON, its sequel series) as one of my influential works. But what is that influence? I know I’ve read the whole series several times. My copies of the books are in terrible shape.
